Stumbled across a few quarts of Amsoil Syncromesh on my shelf that I once bought for an NV4500 GM, that I never ended up using. Im due for a fluid change on a ZF-S542 that has some worn syncros and wondering if anyone has had good results. I have heard rumors that it's good stuff.

I always use Mobil 1 syn ATF in ZF's....but this will be the last oil change in this trans before it has to come out for some syncro's/cold shifting problems, so im thinking I will give this a try and see what happens.

I should have in installed in a couple weeks and will report back. If it helps out the synchro problem even a bit, it will be note worthy.

The Pennzoil version didn't make enough of a difference, so I ended up rebuilding with a new synchro/bearing kit. I did refill with new Pennzoil and haven't had any issues since.

Finally got the Amsoil synchromesh MTF in my ZF. I immediately noticed an improved shift into 2nd, 3rd and 4th, (the gears that I was having synchro grind issues with before). Its no longer cold enough to know how it will do in the dead of winter but im pretty sure it will be better then the Pennzoil synthetic atf that I have always used in ZF's.
The Amsoil synchromesh will now be my "go to" for ZF5 fluid. I think I will also try it in my ZF6 that will soon be due for a flush

Haha we used to be close when I was in Osoyoos and you in Keremeos, and we never met, and now were still kind of close and haven't met.
We'll have to make it happen. Im actually near Slocan. Run a towing outfit here, I tow into Cranbrook from time to time. Are you living in Kimberly or just there for a bit? I could run into Nelson or Castlegar if your passing thru

Any update on how the Amsoil is working for you? Just to clarify, did you use the 5w30 synchromesh fluid or the 75w90 manual transmission fluid they list?

Hey, ya I used the 5w-30 MTF. I am happy with it and I will choose it as my go to fluid, on ZF's from now on worn out or otherwise. I only have experience with it in one trans so far, and it is better then syn ATF. Cold syncro crunches are still there, but definitely less then before. Likely due to thinner MTF at colder temps.

So I think it should buy me some more time with a tired trans, opposed to dropping it and rebuilding. So that's good news. I will be installing it in a early ZF6 at some point this year, and will report back with results.

Do you think it might be a good idea to try the MTG since it's a little thicker? From my reseach it actually carries a ZF spec that works for the S5-42. My tranny has a few synchro issues when trying to shift it a little faster. Sounds like either way I'm going to give the Amsoil a try. It's just trying to figure out which product at this point.
