Ok, so, how do I tell what sending unit to order for the front tank on a 1984 f250 6.9idi? Several are on the web...some with a pump, some without, some for a 17 gallon tank, some for a 19 gallon tank... Do I remove the old one and go from there, or is there a way to tell either from the door sticker, or VIN number. Would love to be able to order the correct item, and do the swap in a couple of hours instead of taking things apart, ordering, waiting, then putting it all back together..Thx for the replies...

With pump will be a gasser. You may need to pull yours for comparison. Check your VIN for build date. If late '84, 85' should fit.

Go to Gas tank depot. Look up your truck. I just did my front and rear sending units on my '87 6.9. They have shower heads too. Easiest to pull the body I think. Still a pain in the ass, but dropping the tank is worse IMO.

Update on the sending unit/tank issues... Ordered a new tank for a 1985 f series, and sending unit also...the 85 tank hole and sending unit are 3.5 inches...84s are 2 inch, and unavailable, unless you have your old on rebuilt at tristar radiator...So, if you think your tank is shot, or having issues with sending units on your 80 to 84 diesels, I'd suggest going with the 85 tank and sending units....don't forget the newer pigtail from LMC...
