5 cylinder diesel Benz motor in a second gen Ranchero: they say everything's been done but I think that might be a first with regards to engine swaps.

With the right gearing (I'm guessing that's gonna get a four speed Benz automatic) I'm betting you could end up north of 30 MPGs.

Two thumbs way up Brian! :Thumbs Up

What transmission are you going to use? A T-5 would bolt in with an adapter plate, and there's pedal kits to convert to the compatible Mustang-style cable...

T5 is a perfect combo on the 3.0 TD adapter kit available to fit the smallblock Ford bell and flywheel even. company in PA makes a good kit. this could be a fun little build, lots of aftermarket mods for the 5 cyl now too.

Sweet! I have an OM617 sitting on a 50 something Ford f1 truck frame with front cab of a 2000 ranger, back bed of a s10, its a long-term project but I traded a 22 rifle for it! I really want to put that OM617 in my 71 W200 but not sure about mating the bellhousing to the tranny to the engine.

Beware, a co-worker (oldtimer) with considerable years wrenching on Mercedes diesels says NOT to turbo the NA engine.

YMMV.

mine is a turbo engine.
but ive heard something about having the flexplate for the auto trans being special to each engine.
I don't have one except in the car with a thrashed engine.
can anyone shed some insight?
