Hello all. Dropped the zf5 tonight in preparation of the 6.9 swap (yes the one I’ve been doing for 3 1/2 years now) and I’m a little surprised by what I found. The throw out bearing is DONE, as I knew by the noise when the clutch was depressed.
The input shaft however, looks in very nice shape besides the hardened grease that I’m sure was causing drag. Is this the dual mass flywheel? It looks very similar to the new kit I got from LUK. The previous owner said he did a clutch job and converted to a single mass flywheel, but a very well respected member here said if it was a SMF conversion, it was the quietest one he ever heard. Does any of this look original from 1989?

Most importantly, should I clean up and grease the input shaft where the throw out bearing rides, or just clean it and leave it alone? Old grease that gets dirty hardens and makes matters worse but I never did this before.
Thanks!

yep, single mass, my SM set up was not very load either. if you have a balanced injector system that can help a lot in quieting them down with even pulses on the engine.

plastic sleeves can run dry but if it is metal on metal with the throw out bearing you need some grease.
