powermaster 9050 is what I use in all my rigs.
ive only been using them in my IDI's for the past 6 years, but ive been buying powermasters for literal decades.

in muscle cars, right next to headers.
in boats with getting wet on the regular.
in the past 22 years, ive only had 1 fail, and it was because it sat in water for a month.

not too sure about the 9051, as ive tried powerstroke starters to no aval.

Yes the 9051 will work, I have it in my truck. I bought it just because I couldn't find 9050 locally, but 9051 was available with good price. Before I bought it 2-3 years ago I asked Powermaster tech support that will it work or not and here's their answer,:
"The 9051 is the same starter as the 9050 without the spacer for a Powerstroke. All you would need to do is remove the spacer and reuse your factory mounting bolts for correct fitment."

We bought a couple of these recently. Model is 34MT, it's supposed to be the a special blend of the armature and windings of what was spec'd for the industrial B-series cummins with a bendix that works on the IDI motors. They were a custom order by this shop in Bryan, Tx and I think they said they have 10 or so left but the part number doesn't show up in the Delco Remy Catalog b/c it's non stock. It's a heavy beast and seems really well built but only time will tell. Not sure what shipping might be but the starter itself was about $100. Shop is BCS Alternator & Starter Services (979)775-9470 I don't think they have a website.

on edit: When I looked at Remy's site, the 34MT series isn't listed and they say this particular model is "obsolete" but all the other models listed with it are 39MT. They show the 35MT is for 9L engines @ 4.6kw and the 29MT is for up to 6.6L @ 2.9kw. For ref powermaster says the 9050/1 is 2.5kw so if everyone's happy with those, these ought to be ok too.

Is the PowerMaster 9050 also good for 7.3 L IDI Ford E350 van?

The last starter I used had some sort of dirt shield / snout over the drive gear.

That was just a design change, most of the new starters have a sheet with them that basically say "this might look different but it still will work"

I can't think of any reason the 9050 wouldn't work in your application.

So maybe I already have a Powermaster?

So it has been a very mild winter here in central Ca so far. Has only got below 32 a couple of times.

Early fall I noticed the old 7.3 not starting quite like normal. A little slow cranking. Took a quick look but no time so kept using it. Then when it got a bit colder a couple glow plugs went out so it was turning slow and starting rough and smoking. Changed the gp’s and it got better but still turning slow. So ASSUMING the batteries must be good (hey they are pretty new right?) And the starter had been on there since I bought the truck from the original owner in 2001 ( he had just installed it) That is when I posted this question on starter recommendations.

You have probably checked the condition of the cables, and made sure the terminals are clean. I had a slow starting problem in my '87 a few weeks back, and it was corroded ends on the cable. I put in a new cable between the batteries, and military terminals on all four posts, and now all is swell and the engine cranks faster again.

So checking things out a little better I found out the starter from 2001 looks just like a Powermaster. AND one of my nearly new batteries is open....zero volts output.
So my 18 year old starter that looks identical to a Powermaster ( no idea where it came from ) has been getting by starting the truck on one group 65 battery!

The interesting thing was my first test pointed at the starter since it showed over 600 amps draw and battery volts dropping to around 9.5. Once I swapped the batteries from the 96 in, the amp draw dropped to 300 and cranking volts came up to over 10.5.
Watts Law is still true I guess. It is back to being running before you can let go of the key. Amazing it was starting on one battery for months even with 2 bad glow plugs.

Thanks for the tip in Bryan. I just spoke with Billy at BCS Alternator & Starter Services (979)775-9470 and struck a deal to send him the rebuilt starter that came in my E99, so he can check it out and see if it's worth rebuilding. If it's chinesium then I'll give it to him for a core, if he wants it.
