As I haven’t been around many of these I wanted to make sure she’s looking okay. Below is a video of Betsy idling after starting this morning at 30F (cold but no cold advance as it was already running an hour previous). Wanted to see what y’all thought about the exhaust color and my idle note/speed. The exhaust smells like spent diesel and clears up when warm. If I step on it while sitting, it will shoot the typical black smoke followed by a puff of white and then back to clear at idle.

Oil hasn’t dropped much since the summer (front seal has small leak) and does not feel thin or smell any different. I may have a slight seep around my lift pump and plan to replace soon but don’t know that makes a huge difference.

I would advance it a dime, and take another video at the same temp if you can. You will be surprised how much better it’s going to run, and it may smooth out the engine enough you won’t even notice it.

I’ll give it a shot and let you know how we get on. Thanks!

@Thewespaul After making some wrenches and cleaning up the IP, I advanced it a dime as you recommended. Temperature outside is 8* warmer than the other video. Started up quicker and with barely a puff of smoke. May sound rough a little still? Let me know what you think.

here is the cold advance after adjustment.

And here are before and after pictures of the timing marks:

Sounds a lot better, the pump is clearly pretty tired by how much throttle you have to give it to bring the rpm up, and sounds like it has a bit of an injector misfire. I would run it like that for a bit and use some hotshots diesel extreme and see if the injectors clean up.

You mean this stuff? As this engine is a reman and the Odometer is the 5 digit at 81631(stuck as well because the speedo gear) I really am unsure of the Injector or IP health. Might be looking into a rebuild this summer if new injectors don’t help it out any.

Get a new cowl seal also or rain water will get in the filter cover & hydrolock your engine. Only takes a little to get past the rubber mounting washer.

That's it. I bought one of those for my 85 F250. I've seen guys mention using a seal for the bottom of a garage door. I think I'm going to try that when I'm working on my 81 F150 (here soon).

Very early on, with mine, I almost hydrolocked it because of rain.

What I did was pulled the bolt out of the center of the cover, and added an o-ring, and a flat rubber washer. Double overkill for sealing out the rain.
