There have been a lot of upgraded starters come out in the Diesel PU market in the past few years but I don’t recall one for the IDI. Has anyone came across a new starter or upgraded starter?
Had poor results from Chinese knockoffs and most rebuilds except local rebuilders.

Looks like I don’t have a crisis, a fairly new battery has failed open so it was mimicking a draggy starter. Sounds better but still thinking maybe a little off.

I think Power Master is the "go to" IDI starter.
I'd say the DB Electric is the default go-to, and Power Master is the premium option. I've read tons of good about DB Electric starters and I'll take one of those any day over the parts store junk, but if money is no object and you want the best... Power Master 9050.

I put a Power Master starter in my truck last August and I love it, you just bump the key and it starts. It'll really catch you off guard if you're used to a tired OEM starter :D

DB let me down on my Powerstroke. It was great for about a year then started cranking slower and slower. Took the DB to the electrical rebuilder I was using for my fleet work. He went through it for me, he indicated all of the bearings had failed because they were very poor quality. Genuine ND parts fit.
I put it back on (missed the instant cranking) and guess what it failed again, this time something else. No knockoff ND for me again.

Does ALL Powermaster 9050's fit the IDI? Yeah, stupid question, I know...

But I'm serious...

How is the Nippondenso starter that Rock Auto sells? They'll ship that to me for crazy high money, which is better than any of the Powermaster vendors will do.

Also Powermaster 9051 will work if you find a good deal for it as I did. It's for Powerstroke and it comes with a spacer and a set of new bolts. Starters are the same, just leave the spacer off and use the original IDI starter bolts...

Never used Powermaster. Tried DB, it lasted 13 months (12 month warranty). Decided to just go with O'Reilly Ultima Starter Part # R812323A (Easy to warranty, Lifetime warranty). It's lasted 2 1/2 years/22,000 miles DD. Some have a hard time replacing them. I can do it in 15-20 min.

Ok, ok. I talked myself into a Powermaster. It's in my cart on Amazon and I will buy it on Friday (my next payday). I figured why not? Yes, the cheaper one on there works just fine for now, but I'm going to be doing a bunch of work to the truck anyway so I may as well just do that too. Then I'll still have my current cheapie as a back up.
