Sitting here bored at a truck stop overnight, I got to thinking about about the muffler on my RV.

I'm pretty sure it's the stock muffler
(old pic from last year so it's not fully in frane)

I'm guessing it's not the best muffler to have with the ATS 085, or does it matter much? I guess I need to crawl under and take some pics of the downpipe situation.

A FlowFX is pretty darn cheap...

10 years ago I would have said the best muffler for a turbocharged IDI is no muffler at all LOL. Then I got tired of the cabin drone and put a straight through muffler on. That killed the nice turbo whistle, but not the drone!:frustrate

That's when I realized that stock mufflers do work well to keep a vehicle quiet.

Am I to understand your rig came from factory with a 3" tailpipe? For some reason, I thought the IDI's came with no bigger than 2.75". I could be wrong though.

I need to measure the tail pipe again, it might be 2.75". I just linked 3" as an example.

This thing is already noisy as heck being a van with a doghouse. The cheap stereo I moved from my f250 is far from loud even at full volume at highway speed. It was plenty loud in the truck. Unless it's a speaker issue.

But no, these vans are generally louder in the cab I think.

I finally dug out my barely used sjcam5000x action camera and set it up as a dash cam last night since my cheap dash cam needs a hard to get battery. I will pull a video clip from it tomorrow and post it so you can hear how loud it is in here.

Since it's got an ats system it's highly unlikely that it's a stock exhaust. Pretty sure back then when you bought the turbo kit an exhaust was part of it. ATS definitely listed an upgrade for the exhaust as required to be able to support the turbo.

Also your pic shows what looks like slip connections to the muffler and that's not what the factory provides. OEM was all bolted flanges.

The main diagram doesn't show anything beyond the downpipe, and the drawn pipe sizes seem a little deceiving compared to the real world kit. Doesn't mean there wasn't an exhaust kit but you'd think there would be mention of it.

That muffler looks like the muffler that has been on every 085 or o88 kitted truck that I have owned or worked on. I think they came with the turbo kit.

Well that's good to know. Maybe it's not as restricted as I thought it might be.

A video of me pulling up to a stop sign, then taking off. You can hear my music playing (yeah, my music tastes are unusual LOL) pretty well at idle and lower speed. When it cuts to me driving at around 60mph, you almost can't hear it.

I think you're right on this. Vans are louder than trucks (I'm only talking about IDIs here). The engine is closer to you while you're driving. Your feet are in front of the back of the engine. The doghouse isn't much for insulating or keeping noise out. I also believe that you've mentioned that yours doesn't seal real well. That would also add to the noise level.
Now for the radio. While it could be a speaker issue, I would think that it's more of an interior volume issue. You have the same power output from the radio trying to fill a space that's many times larger than in your truck. The sound waves basically echo off of the inside of a truck cab more than they do in your RV. Not to mention that they would also tend to be directed back at you in a truck, but they would go many different directions in your RV. Your soft furniture and bedding inside your RV will absorb the sound waves instead of bounce them back to your ears.
Muffler. It doesn't look stock to me either, but I don't have a lot of experience with IDI powered vans or their exhaust. Vans could have come out with different mufflers than the trucks did. I also have no idea on the flow characteristics on your muffler whether stock or from ATS. I can say that I was amazed at how quiet it was back by the tail pipe while the engine was running. That made me assume that the muffler was stock.

My NA F250 can be pretty loud I guess, but it has 3.55 gears while the RV has 4.10.

Maybe it's due to how long the exhaust pipe is with the 176" WB, maybe it loses some strength before it gets to the end. Could be whatever muffler it has too.

I got mine just west of Tulsa. The cabover has a queen mattress plus room too spare at the end. Some floorplans have a full or queen in the rear, but mine has the generator and roomy bathroom back there.

When I got my current 85 F250, the speedometer didn't work. I installed a universal, GPS read speedometer. I had been thinking that it had 4.10's, but after the speedo, I drove it as fast as I could go down the highway. With the 4 speed (no overdrive) transmission, I let off thee throttle when I got to 78 MPH. Our trucks, without overdrive, 4.10 gears, and 238/85R16 tires will usually top out at 65 to 70 MPH. Another way to tell, this is from my observations of test driving MANY of these trucks, at 60 MPH, with 4.10s, 235/85R16 tires, and being in overdrive, the engine will usually be running between 2000 and 2200 RPM. The tachometer can vary some in it's readout too, but it should be close.

Check the plate bolted on the outside of the diff cover. I'm guessing Sterling has them too, same as Dana?
