7.3 idi no start/bad noises after reinstalling injector pump

hey folks, very worried I've got catastrophic damage here to my f250 plow truck. It cranked at first at normal speed, then yucky ycky sounds, and then cranking slowed to a crawl and made nasty noises. This was after reinstalling injectors and pump..
Can the pump be installed incorrectly?
did someone play with the pump when it was in a shop and turn out the torque screw too far?
Did I knock a ton of carbon in the pre-cups?
Did I drop a tool down in the gear?
did I drop a valve by using a vacuum cleaner in the injector bores? so much a bummer.
Or is there hope?

Well there is hope. After removing the driver valve cover where it seemed the engine clunking was coming from and cranking and sitting and cranking again, it came out of it and whirled properly. Not sure what explains it but I suspect it had to do with the carbon from the injector bores causing interference.
I honestly can say it was not a starter cranking issue because I tried to turn it with a bar on the crank pulley bolt and met so much resistance I would have broken a half inch to 3-8 drive adapter had I pulled any harder.
The driver side is where I had the most difficulty removing injectors due to carbon. cyls 2 and 4 being the worst of them. perhaps this has happened to someone else?

That's real weird. Hard to imagine a sizeable enough chunk of carbon to pinch between the piston crown and the head falling through the hole in the precup.

It's running well now?

Yes, it's running well enough now, SlippyRider. It smokes considerably more then before, but starts and runs better then before the injector/pump removal/replacement. I always had one cylinder lagging behind the others, but now I have a much longer run time before smoke is down to a reasonable amount. I suspect it's the same cylinder that is now causing the increased smoke issues, cyl 2, as a result of oil control issues. What do you suppose changed? Could some carbon have plugged up rings more? valve stem seals rotted off?

The improvements are not only better starting (quicker "catch" time), but cooler running when working hard and a better sound at idle. Having gone over the injectors and done some nozzle swaping from a spare set of d code injectors might explain this. The pump as far as I know did not get any attention. The injectors which were reported to be all bad after getting an ultrasonic bath and pop testing at a diesel service shop were later pop tested by me, massaged, were replaced with new combustion seals. It's annoying we can't get quality nozzles at an affordable price like you can with most any other mechanical diesel. I'm more accustomed to the zexel/delphi/bosch/ injector work where you just order the nozzles thru the diesel shop. What is it about Stanadyne??

I have not yet been able to do a compression test. It uses oil but I don't have a sense of weather it uses more now. Despite the improvements, the smoking issue is a set-back for sure. It's bad. even when warm it's gonna smoke up the scene starting out. I've a parts motor to remove from a 93 econoline that may donate parts when I get to it in the future.

Or maybe it was a hydro-lock do to a stuck delivery valve and injector pintle?

Or I broke the tip of a GP working the carbon coated injector out of its bore?
