Looking online and I can't seem to find much specifics about the differences between these transfer cases.

Apparently the 4407 is a stronger transfer case used in F350s and up, but other then that, I don't know much else about it. Any advantages to upgrading from a 1356 to a 4407?

Anybody heard of a broken 1356?

The only thing I have noticed is the 1356 for pickups has a slip yoke like a 2wd automatic. So you can’t run without the rear driveshaft. Broncos have a fixed rear yoke.
4407’s have a fixed rear yoke are much rarer than 1356 and not worth the upgrade unless you are building a serious off road rig.

Stay away from the 4407, they were only ran for 2 years, parts are hard to find for them especially the f350 style front yoke. They are a 6 pinion planetary compared to the 4 pinion in the 1356.

If you want a stronger flanged transfer case get one from a 99-03 7.3 auto, it’s a nv271 (nv273 is the electric one), has a 6 pinion planetary and parts are plentiful.

note: there is 3 different versions of the nv271/273, the differences are the input shafts, one is a 31 spline ford that fits the older trucks like ours, the other one is a 33 or 34 spline used in the 03+ superduties and a 29 spline I think that dodge uses.

Thank you! This explains why I had a hard time finding info. OK then, steer clear it is!

Only problems I've heard of on a 1356 stem from the poor pump design and loss of lube oil pressure with the pump spins, and that's a fairly easy flaw to fix. Other than that no reason to mess with a swap.

Only first hand issue I've seen are the junk shift fork pads fall off. Have had 3 do it.

I am pretty sure the 1356 is very similar to the older 1345 I have in my truck. I busted the 1345 at the drag strip at the Virginia rally. After tearing it apart I'm not too surprised. In high range the gears aren't engaged very deep and it ended up stripping the teeth off. In low range the gears are engaged deep. So in low range they are plenty stong, but high range not so much. The planetaries actually aren't what failed. It failed where it couples the input and output shafts together. They only engage about a 1/4in in high range.
