Reman is around 250, advanced auto, autozone, o'Reilly etc sell reman for 300, most I've seen are around 400+ even junkyards because they know it's in demand as well. But the guy 30 minutes from me rebuilds them for 250. He says he does quite a few but he doesnt stock any, he used too before they became scarce. If your interested in getting one rebuilt check out. Crites Core Company in spencer, indiana. I believe hes got a website as well

And although expensive...what are the options out there for a "new" pcm or remaned one? And have folks had much luck with them?
As these trucks are aging, I can see sourcing PCM's and IDM's becoming a major problem in the near future. They will all fail sooner or later. If they can't be sourced, that will spell the fate of these 7.3psd trucks I reckon.

I have a few high hour 7.3 psd service trucks and im at the point where I almost want to replace the computers with new ones BEFORE they fail.....but would need to be sure of the quality of the aftermarket replacements.

Fix until broke strategy? Honestly in 16 years of owning 7.3 PSD I've NEVER heard of a PCM failing out of the blue......UNLESS someone was monkeying with it. IDM's on the super duties do have an occasional issue with water getting inside but the OBS ones are immortal.

Well.. I was trying to fix my 4x4 esof not working, I replaced the gem because everything lead back to it. Ford told me I needed the DM and I had the GB version. So I switched it out, now my 4x4 works but my fuel pump, wts and glow plugs and no tach when cranking. So I switched it back to the old gem so I could at least drive it but it does the same thing now and 4x4 doesnt work. It's been a very ridiculous couple of weeks

That is the main reason I only buy a MANUAL 4x4! When you are out in the mountains or the desert you can not afford a failure. So I try to make my trucks as simple as I can.

Believe me that's the only kind I've ever had up until this truck. But I wanted a pstroke and I could afford this one at the time. Next truck I buy will be back to manual 4x4 for sure.

No, It called be proactive. The pcm's do fail and I have had two customers in the past month with failed pcms, and I have lost 2 personally in the past decade or so. Electronic things all have a lifespan, and as these trucks are aging; these failure points are starting to present themselves more and more. I run emergency service vehicles and would like to replace things like the pcm/idm every 8000hrs or so just like I replace the cps's annually as they are a know problem. I can't have failures on the road. I have to stay ahead of things instead of drive until they fail.

BUT he specializes in powerstrokes and will update the programs. With fast turn around, and if it isn’t the PCM you are out $45 and get some real help figuring it out.

Whatever works for you. PCMS and IDMS are damn reliable on these trucks...they rarely fail unless someone is monkeying with them.

I'll give you the CPS failure...it has been a minor issue. I've replace one in each of my trucks....over the course of 466k miles combined. Some trucks eat them more than others...if so why not keep a spare and a 10mm wrench in the glove box if your paranoid over a sudden failure instead of replacing perfectly working components?

So, in your case, the TC lockup issue can be worked around several ways:
1. Unhook the TC lockup wire and cap it - No TC lockup, but at least you have 4 gears and a running truck, and can upgrade the TC lockup later.
2. Upgrade to a 4R100 trans from a later truck when you do the PCM upgrade.
3. Install a manual trans and not worry about the stupid lockup.[/QUOTE]

If I'm reading this correctly, I CAN do a pcm "upgrade". What do you mean exactly? A different model pcm? Like the dpc422 instead of my dpc402? And I wont have tc lock up? I'm pretty sure when my trans was rebuilt that they may have rebuilt it to later model specs, it shifts stupid hard sometimes and the tc lock up is random sometimes as well, sometimes it locks up as it shifts to 2nd or 3rd and it makes it extremely hard shift and obviously lowers the rpm quite a bit and makes less power to do less boost due to less rpm... it did not do all this before it was rebuilt. Anyway, back to the question, can I use a different computer? Either way I'd like to have manual trans and case but that's definitely not in the budget.
