That's a LOT of motor for that chassis, in the neighborhood of 1300 pounds - plus transmission! GM made a lot of medium trucks in that era with 4-53Ts, scrapping one out is probably your easiest plan.

A buddy of mine did a 4-53 conversion into a Ford F-150 (1960's model) and it was a DOG! I have driven and owned Detroit Diesel 8V92TA, in a 10 wheel dump truck, and that sucker moved a load. Not like high horsepower engines of today, it was no Dog. I am not a fan of these old engines.

you couldn't pay me to deal with GM's steering boxes anymore.
I put a 6 bt in a 77 1 ton frame with a 69 elcrapimno ontop.
framerails would bend by leaning on them...
and youre likely going to have to cut that crossmember...
gonna need some beef.

I thought that is why people generally boxed the frames on them...

Have you been over to 4btswaps? A lot of Detroit info there. This swap has been done any times. Detroit’s are a love or hate thing. I love them because the are misunderstood, visceral living beasts. But they do get old if you have to live with them for hours and hours. I used to build hopped up 8V-92’s. Nothing better than “needing” to check max governed rpm and jake brake settings on a Freightliner with the cab jacked up which disconnects the muffler and leaves about 4ft pipe off the turbo. It’s a wonder I ain’t deaf. And no diesel smoke smells as good as Detroit smoke......

Hey IDloit, I haven't been here for a while. How did your frame rails bend over? I've never heard of that problem with a Cummins swap.

not bend over, they would flex while you leaned on them.
I ended up doing a front crossmember to strengthen them a bit, then I plated the inside of the frame rail with 3/8" plate where the gear box mounts
