Ok, shop says they are ready to drop the tank.

Want to know if it is ok with me... Because... They can't find a replacement pickup. (Showerhead)

(92 f250 xlt lariat)

Given their 'criteria'... I told them all I am concerned with, is that the tank gets cleaned out. And that, when finished, I can get gas out of the tank again.

They, of course got all flustered again, and said they can't find the pickup anywhere. Etc.

I suggested forgetting about the showerhead, and just putting a hose on it to reach within a half inch of the bottom of the tank.

They said, then where would you put the sensor...

Yeah, left it with them being frustrated and saying they would just have to figure something out.

Does someone have a quick picture of what is inside the fuel tank? I know this doesn't have a pump inside the tank. What IS there?

Good point.

I can't help but think a perfectly functional replacement can't be fabricated from a stainless steel cat food bowl, a stainless steel scrubbing pad (filter), some home Depot brass fittings.

our tanks are pretty cheap, if I was paying for all of that labor I'd probably hang a new tank too
I think I paid 60 bucks for a side tank from amazon with free shipping

PS: I'd rather deal with a proctologist, or maybe the tax man, than most shop managers / "service" managers!
Actually, these people are pretty good.

I got the feeling that the confusion was possibly because she had never dealt with a diesel f250 before. And her confusion was twofold. It was because she expected a fuel pump in there. And because she expected all the complication of all the modern gas vehicles.

In the end, I sent them an email, explaining what was in the tank. What they should probably expect to find as far as troubles. And links to the full unit you showed above, (I'd already found that. Great minds, right? :D), and a showerhead I found on amazon.

I have every expectation they'll handle it great! :D

Trex auto sells exact replacement sending units and shower heads.
@Thewespaul Thank you for that.

Since Selahdoor is a pretty low key guy I hope he doesn't mind me piggy backing on his thread. Is the lock ring just a punch and a hammer to remove? Lefty loosey? It looks like I can fish the front sending unit out without dropping the tank.

I try to blow all of the crap out of the place where the ring sets. Then I'll take some WD-40, PB Blaster, etc. and spray it on the ring. This really makes a difference in how easy the ring comes loose.

Stopped at the shop on my way home today.

Good news is that I'll probably be bringing it home tomorrow.

Bad news is that the front tank will be sitting in the bed.

Mine is the plastic tank.

Apparently they don't make the pickups for those any more.

MAN!!! You should have seen that pickup. SUPER rotted! Holes all over the place. Half the pickup pipe was just plain broken off. Etc.

I'll get some pics when I get it home again.

How different are the tanks from the 89 to the 92? Anyone know?

Not very different at all in the trucks in my yard, well the ones I dropped out of them and scrapped. The 85 the 89 both 91s and the 94 all seem pretty much the same. But I have fitted the bronco 33 gal tank and pickups in all of mine and bypassed the fsv as all of them have junked on me shortly after owning them and just too full of crud to want to fix or clean. Personal preference really
