Hey gang, kinda stumped here. Now that the weather is turning I'm having hard starts. Truck starts just fine when the weather is warm and after she's warmed up. Cold weather she cranks fine, catches and dies. I've checked the GPS, have 12.6v at the hot side, 11.6 at the switched side, 10.5v at each gp connector and each gp omhs at. .4 and gp are new zd9s. New return line kit. Fuel filter is full of fuel. Not sure where to look. Truck starts right up when plugged in. One battery is one year old, other is about 5 years. Starter motor unknown age. Thinking maybe starter is getting a bit aged and can't spin fast enough?

One battery is a year old and the other is about 5 years old. I would bet this is your problem. What you really have is ONE battery in TWO places. If half the battery is five years old, then the whole battery is five years old. I have ALWAYS change BOTH batteries at the same time. Try this first and if the starter isn't spinning fast enough, that would be my second choice. Good luck!

I never thought about it like that. When I bought the truck it had one bad battery so I threw in a spare I had thinking that was good. I replace the oldest battery and report back. Thanks for the info!

While I'm sure replacing the old battery will help enormously I would always keep an eye on how long the GP controller cycles the plugs. An old GP harness may have extra resistance due to damage/degradation and this will fool the controller into thinking the plugs are hotter than they really are which will make cold starts tougher.

With healthy batteries and starter you truck should turn over so fast it startles people. Just the other day some guy was yakking on his cell phone and jumped when I turned the key--cheap laugh for me!!

So I replaced the 5 year old battery. 38 degrees this morning and truck fired right up after one cycle of glow plug goodness, literally one ruh, not even ruh ruh ruh ruh. Thanks for the tip. I'm not a battery expert, what's the thinking on the older battery? Cold weather sapping it's charge and cold cranking ability?

I can't answer that but the batteries in mine were 4 years old. It started better on ONE new one than the old pair. I was surprised!
