So I am going to buy this bronco next weekend or the one after hopefully if someone buys my superduty dana 60 axle haha. My plan is to turbo a healthy 6.9 I have laying around and then put an auto behind it and gear it for highway cruising. My question is what auto would you guys use? I have a c6 for it (needs work) and a zf5 but would like to keep this one auto. I’m not necessarily concerned with having overdrive as long as the gearing is tall enough, if that’s even possible with keeping enough low end to be fully loaded down inside and maybe pulling 2 quads. What gearing would you go for with 35’s as a probable tire choice and a desired cruising speed of 65?

I really like your Bronco.
I can't speak to the trans question because I prefer "bolt action". I chose a T-19 for my Bronco conversion based on the final drive characteristics of the truck in my avatar (running 33's & 4.10).
Great project! Have fun!

Thank you it’s not mine yet but hopefully the deal comes through. I prefer the old school way too, I zf’d my highboy when I did it’s 6.9 swap. Although I wish I had a 7 speed spicer but that’s another thread haha. This one will be for the lady and kid and camping trips. It’s just a cruiser not a bruiser like the highboy. So I think auto is the route this time, plus it already has provisions for a c6.

You're not far from me. How do plan to smog/register it with the 6.9? Not to squash you're plan, but California is funny with motor swaps. You can't put in the diesel motor unless it was option from the factory (it wasn't).

You’re correct! My plan is to simply register it to me with the gas engine in place then do the swap. Then after that I’m amador county so I don’t have to smog it ever again. Plus I may be moving to Utah Or southeastern Oregon soon.

Is that for all cars, or just old ones? I've got an 1980 bronco, I'd like to do that with, but I'm in Nevada county.

Anything. Once you smog it and it passes and you’re all good and registered, you’re good to go for the length of your ownership of the vehicle. As long as you don’t fall behind on the tags or non-op then take it off you won’t have any issues. I believe the only two county’s in the state that do it that way are Amador and Calaveras. I could be wrong though.

If you are going to use 35's, you had better use 4.10 gears. You are going to install a user friendly transmission, but I would not consider a 4 inch lift with 35's user friendly at all. She is going to get tired of boosting herself into it all the time, and the rear tailgate is going to be high enough to be a pain loading and unloading. You may be able to use the stock gearing if you stick with a more reasonable tire size.

I’m not sure what size tires are on it now but I’d be ok sticking with that size. It looks good as it sits to me and to the woman.

I had a 79 Bronco, 351M400 with a C4 trans, no lift with 31” tall tires. I’m guessing those tires look like 31-33” tall tires, and I think 4.10 gears will be what you want.

Keep in mind that if you decide you want to change to 3.73 or even 3.55 gearing, 9” rear ended gears grow on trees and the carrier set up/swapping is pretty easy/cheap.

Sounds like an awesome swap, I really liked mine, and I think a 6.9 would be a really nice swap in a half ton short wheel base chassis.
