I've been considering the 6.9 cooling mod for the heads for my 93 7.3. I'm looking for input for if it is worth the trouble. I heavy haul most of the time when I drive it. I've already ordered studs, stage 1 injectors, and intercooler. Still on the fence on turbo and ip.

I would do it if I had the heads off, but I wouldn't pull the heads JUST to do it. If you're doing studs you'll have them off anyway so I don't see any reasons not to. It's not very difficult.

It’s totally worth it. I run the shop truck with a big pump and high egts in 110+ Texas temps with no fan or fan shroud with no overheating issues, you won’t do that with half the coolant passages plugged.

What's your temps look like with any load/towing? My 7.3 N/A never got hot without a fan unloaded, but you are talking lots more fuel/boost. Either way: I'm impressed with the improvement that opening up those passages makes.

If I put a fifth wheel behind it I put a fan on and don’t have it get above 200. With a couple core engines and transmissions (say 2500-3500 lbs) in the bed it sits around 200 and gets up to 220 if I’m passing everything on the highway.

Interesting, I have no intentions of driving without a fan. When I pull, I need the utmost in reliability. Engine temps and egt has to remain at a safe level. Hopefully once I pull the trigger on a bigger pump and turbo, I wont have to drive it on the floorboard for hours at a time.

My water temp is pretty much the same with or without the fan when empty so I just left it off to get better mileage and less wear on the water pump. I don’t think you will be flooring all the time after you upgrade, most driving is done within a quarter throttle, and with my 38’ travel trailer hooked up I can still roast the tires if I take off too quick from a line, it’s a big difference from a basically stock IDIT setup.

130 pump with a stock turbo at its mechanical limit, 17-18 psi intercooler and over double feed pressure.
