Great question. I'll be interested to see what spares the more experienced IDI driver's carry. As for tools, you always need the one that is not in your tool bag! I generally have a cheap test light, fuses, set of combination wrenches, mulit screwdriver, nippers, the good old Craftsman socket/ socket wrench set, tie wraps, and maybe a hose barb to fix a fuel leak or bypass, tie wire to fix broken chains during the winter. I found the best thing to carry is a list of friends along your route.....

I don't usually carry any extra parts. If I'm on a road trip I'll carry a toolbox with some normal hand tools and some extra oil in case I need to top up.

Couple quarts of oil, a gallon of 50/50 G05 coolant, and a breaker bar with a socket so I can put the stupid serpentine belt back on if I go through a deep puddle cookoo

Sounds like you need to do some serious work on your rig. LOL

my rig is in top shape, anything mechanical can and will brakedown, you asked for list of spares and tools. my list is based on breakdowns in ford diesels that I have seen in the last 30 years of experience with them.

That was meant to be a joke.
The point I was trying to make was some good preventative maintenance would save you from having to haul all of that around.

Is anyone carrying a spare power steering pressure hose? I have blown out two of those on my Powerstroke, and none so far on my IDIs.

do as you wish , I do all preventative maintence on my truck. I don t like breakdowns or being stuck. that is why I drive idis. I have 3. the only times my truck has given me trouble was 1, leaking trans cooler line 2, broken injector line. statistally, belts and hoses are most common items to break on road.

nelsomlinson, great idea on power steering hose, I will have to add that to my box. also I carry an alternator.you have to remember most parts stores don t carry a lot for idis anymore. I also carry a return line kit. on a really long trip I would carry a water pump too a motorcraft new if I can find 1, I have a used 1 for now. I basically try to carry my parts with me, stores near me don t have a lot of stock for idis any more, which means a 1 or 2 day wait on the side of road if you breakdown.

It really depends for me on the distance I'm travelling. When I went to Texas I grabbed pretty much anything I could think of to take with me.

Typically just running around here I keep a set of spare belts, Jumper cables, a bottle jack, and a tire iron. I intend to have some wrenches and a socket set but I haven't done it yet. Personally, I'm usually close enough that if something really does go bad I can get my Wife or my Father to come get me and get some tools. Thankfully the truth is I haven't had a breakdown of that extent since I bought the truck. I just hope ol' man Murphy doesn't make me regret saying that LOL
