Ive got this e350 7.3 idi with an E40d transmission. I cant figure out if the sound is related to the torque converter or a gear is cooked inside.
My best hope is that it is engine related and maybe out of fuel.
The sound is twice as loud as the normal engine does. At first I thought it was the exhaust valve going out because it does chuff out the exhaust once in a while.
For about 10 miles sweating bullets driving it home, it got slightly louder and louder.
I dont think it is the engine. RPM on reverse and drive are the same but they produce different sounds.
Was wondering how I can confirm it's the torque converter so I can order a new one while I take out the trans.
The video doesnt sound the same as in real life. Reverse is significanly queter than drive. reverse sounds like asmr to my ear and drive sounds like death metal.

@Christian9112 ,
alright let’s start with oil level of trans?

Does it shift at all / hard shifts?
Is the OD light blinking ?
Does the torque converter lock up or slip?

Usually TC issues show themselves in overdrive when youre trying to lockup on the highway. Sounds more like a cracked flexplate or loose converter nuts.

Maybe it's my ears, but I'm not really hearing any change in the sound.

I second the flexplate theory. When my flexplate cracked a few years ago it sounded like a rod knock in the engine. The last couple of kicks on engine shutdown were also quite audible. Basically, a single crack walked its way around the hub of the flex plate unit it joined all the flange bolt holes together.

The blades in the torque converter itself will usually fail catastrophically, often while pulling away from the curb (getting up to converter stall speed is where a peak stress typically happens). This will result in a no drive condition as the impeller and turbine collide, tearing each other apart. The lockup clutch can start slipping gradually and cause the code 62 condition but won't make much noise (if at all).

Im about halfway to pulling the transmission out. I have unbolted the flexplate off the TC and when I try to flex it with my finger, it creaks. ****. Ive replaced this flexplate a year ago because I thought the first one was cracked. The first one I had was still good but the starter gear is chewed up so I just replaced it.

so far, you guys were right. OD is good. fluids are good. No metal shavings in the pan. fluid level was a little high tho. It covers the entire plastic measurement thing. Where can I get a shorter dipstick? jk. would overfilling it make the flexplate crack or bottom out? I hammered the truck on the freeway before it happend. by hammered, I mean 75 mph at 1100 egt. stop and go traffic might have also pushed it to the edge while trying to prevent ******** from cutting me off.

Update.

I dropped the transmission pan. Not sure if this is normal for the amount of miles it has.
Should I still get a new torque converter? I have havent got to taking the transmission off the engine. What else should I look for? if I pull the transmission out, How would I know for sure the torque converter is still good? Im a little worried.

Edit: Im looking through old posts and it might be normal from clutch wear.

Hard chunks are not usually a good sign. Can you tell if they are magnetic, or plastic, or some other material?

The sludge on the magnet is normal. Most have more then that.

Sounds like normal big city driving to me:dunno

The hard chunks doesnt seem magnetic. It is brittle like an old O-ring when i try to squeeze one in half. The biggest chunk I saw was about 1/16 wide. almost all of the chunks were gasket thin. Could that be clutch material?
I looked into other forums about e40d and some have said that a coast clutch is common to fall out or something?

Plastic would not be clutch material The fine mud you see in the pan is clutch material. That is normal.

The plastic could be anything. I would doubt its from the coast clutch. Usually you will find other parts in the pan if the plastic race self destructs.

The only way to check the torque converter is to take it to a shop. They will cut it open and clean it out.
