Transfer case gasket, is it needed?

Hi gang! Me and chillman are getting ready to swap a new to me e4od into my 94 4x4 e4od. Do I need the gasket between the transmission and transfer case? Or am I just good to go with a bead of RTV?

Bead of the right stuff is what I usually use. Most of the time, that gasket will tear when removing the transfer case and I don't want to have to wait to order a new one in.

Edit: use just a thin smear on the entire surface, you won't need a whole bead per say.

'the right stuff' is definitely the product to use, because it works so well and has no 'set time' - just install, fill and go.

comes in either pressurized cans or a caulk-gun tube(harder to find, more expensive, enough to do a *ton* of gaskets).

Autozone has it and Napa, and I think the others do as well. Napa's been the only place I could find the larger caulk-gun tube, which is what I use these days(I go through a tube a year or so).

ive used ultra gray, no issues
I used 100% silicone tub and tile caulk once(because that was what I had). All the surfaces were clean and I waited 24 hours before adding oil.
It worked for at least 3 years, when I pulled it apart to steal parts for another rig. No leaks!

The real advantage of the (expensive) Right Stuff is it's lack of a waiting period. It's also *very* strong and stretchy when cured.

You can otherwise get away with pretty much any RTV if you really want to.

You shouldn't have to wait any time for any sealant to cure. There's a seal on the back of the transmission and another on the input side of the transfer case. If they're good, there shouldn't be any fluid at this joint.

Are you sure about that? I could have swore the 4x4 e4od didn't have an output shaft seal on the transmission, and that the seal between the transfer case and the transmission was necessary.

Now you may be right about that one. I was going off of my past experience. I have pulled an E4OD out of a 1989 F250 and I don't remember any fluid in between the two, but I could be wrong on that. It was back in 2003. Most of the 4x4 transmissions that I've removed were manual.
