Hi, recently purchased 84 F250 extended cab XLT 4 speed manual 4x4 with 6.9 IDI.
According to the seller, it has 107,000 miles on it.
He put 35 inch tires on it, no lift. I ran it on a 1200 mile run from Kalifornia to White Mountains of Arizona and back.
Overall mileage adjusting to tire size was 15.5 MPG.

It runs fine on the flats, the grades kill it.

I changed all fluids, rear end (black), transfer case (black), engine and transmission (clean, seller said tranny had been worked on).

My question is, how to time pump by ear and how long do injectors and pumps last?

Thanks, Phil

Is your truck have a turbo? If it doesn't itll struggle on hills regardless of the condition of the injectors and ip. For the lifespan of the injectors and ip I read somewhere that they last usually between 120000 and 170000 miles but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

No turbo. The truck appears to be stock.
Thinking of adding a turbo. Not for serious towing, but general drive-ability and light towing.

You can't time an injector pump by ear. If the pump and injectors are the original ones, they are getting close to the end of their lifespan.

These trucks were sold under a 55mph national speed limit (160-170Hp, depending on the year), so don't expect it to keep up with a 400Hp 21 century rig even with an off the shelf turbocharger. Having said that, can you be a little more specific on what kind of hills are killing it? What is your speed and what was the grade? 15.5 MPG isn't too bad if we're talking freeway speeds (70+ MPH).

A non turboed 6.9 will be a bit doggish are you talking of white hills az just west of kingmon az there is a few good hills out there but to me it sounds like you need a bit more air aka turboed and up and injectors have a 100k mile life then they start to pop at different pressures throwing timing off also it should have a little diesel rattle at idle maby mark the location and bump it a little and drive it see what works for you also 15.5 is pretty good

The hills, 5 long grades are 6% plus or minus speed down to 45 mph(third gear) on highway 87 between Phoenix and Payson. And then from Payson to Show Low to Alpine. Total altitude change was from about sea level in CA to 8400 feet in the White Mountains.

It does have the diesel rattle at idle.
Who sells good injectors and pumps?

even with lower miles age doesn’t help anymore and you’re looking at 125,000 150,000 that both injectors and I love pump should be at least tested or replaced, Especially because of our lower quality diesel that does not give us much lubricity As in the past
