I am trying to install a new evaporator in my 1989 F250. I got an evaporator off of Amazon and it is to big about an 1/8th of an inch to deep to fit in the box correctly. I went by the Advanced today and checked and their evaporator is to big too. Has anyone ran into this issue and is there a fix or a place I can get a replacement that will fit.

I am changing over the entire system so I can use PAG oil and hopefully the A/C will blow really cold. Do you think a R134 Evaporator from a newer year would fit.

I believe the r134a evaporator is bigger, ford updated the evap box in 94 and I’ve read that the evap is bigger.

Absolutely no reason to replace the evaporator to use pag oil. Flush it out with a couple cans of brakcleaner.

Rock auto has a choice of evaporators.

The one I bought fit just fine in my 93. Same listings as an 89. The later 134a evaporators are different.

I tried cleaning it and using ester with the old parts except changing the receiver dryer. It never cooled well, it cooled but on a 100 degree day I was getting 85 degree air. I want the a/c to work really good because this is my tow rig and I will be driving it cross cluntry at times in the summer months. Thought a full chang would accomplish this. Its also alot easier since I have the motor out. Of course if I cant find one this one is going back in.

My 87 will freeze you out. Running ester or pag. So does many others on this site using r134a. If yours wont won't cool its not the evaporator.

I replaced everything with parts from rockauto with no issues.

Before with the Ester oil did you have the system properly vacuumed?

With 134a you need a little more condenser to cool your high side and store the condensed high side liquid. That's the problem with the older F12 conversions to 134a. Good luck.

I wasn't sure if it was the evaporator or the condenser, I went ahead and changed them both. I did bring the system to vacuum and it held fine for over an hour. I figured it was probably the condenser or the evaporator might be gummed up, the previous owner had one R134 valve and one R-12 valve. So I just shot gunned it and got the entire system compressor lines and all. I am hoping that it works well. I did find an evaporator and O'Reillys that fit just have to finish all the other work on it to see if it is better.

That's what I did (replace everything) and I have to turn it down on long drives in my Crew cab. It would be nice if the blower was stronger but it works and that's good enough for me!

That's what I'm hoping for next summer!
