Yes , there should be fuel. How full is the tank? The pick ups fall off the senders which makes it suck air.

Usually they suck air at about 1/4 tank. They don't move a lot of fuel, but your lift pump could be weak.The diaphram in the pump can rupture and allow diesel to enter the crank case. Check your oil to be sure that hasn't happened. New pumps are like $20 and super easy to replace.

Did you fill your filter with fuel before putting it on? If while cranking you get intermittent spurts of fuel then you still have air in the system , possibly a failing fuel/lift pump

charge both batteries first to 100%

then your going to have to crank in intervals of 20 seconds or so to prime your system,

(If your fuel system isn’t sealed this hard start issue will happen again )

You have air intrusion in your fuel line system , more than one place , you still have the fuel heater element on top of the filter mount ? That’s where one of mine was , fuel return o rings and lines on the injectors were another , then the pick up tube

yes it was full and it the fuel heater element is that the black plug with the wire run to it

Yes , the o-ring on the inside tends to dry up and leak fuel, do you see a drip pattern on your valve covers at all?

Another way to tell is when someone is cranking push the Schrader valve in at the same time and see what comes out , if you feel air then ;
A. You know your lift pump works
B. No fuel

Don’t forget to charge batteries and also clean the post making sure they have good contact

Ok, you may have more air intrusions, make sure you have more than half a tank, you probably should change out the shower head in the tank

Post up after you do replace the lift pump
