I'm assuming you just fill it, wait, then drain it? I would imagine it would be foolish to run it like this correct?
Yep, you dont want to run it like that, but if youve ever seen the inside of an engine that has a bad lift pump fill the crankcase with diesel, the inside looks immaculate like it just came out of a hot tank.

I have to say that during my time in the business, every engine with a turbo had a similar looking sludge inside it. It would be sticky and would not come off of your skin. We used to call it turbo tar. It was just a thin layer though. Nothing like in your pictures. It wouldn't even be 1/4" thick. Probably closer to 1/8" thick. What caused this in turbo VS. N/A engines? I have no idea.

What about, say 5 cranks of the engine with the key out of the ignition?

Hey, best thing about this, is that you can still put the diesel in the fuel tank afterward! :D

That's crazy... I've put Lucas in my engines for years. Never had any kind of build up like that...

I'm guessing mainly gas engines? Part if it could be not letting the engine cool down after working it hard, so a bit of oil cooks in the turbo. Cooked oil = not so good.
IDIs, well, unless you really try, you are probably going to end up letting the turbo cool down before shutting it off, simply because you usually go to slower roads/driveways etc. as the last stop. In cases where I don't(rest stop off the interstate mainly), I always let the turbo cool down for a minute or two... No issues yet!

Lucas has no detergents or dispersants in it. I could see someone using too much and the soot agglomerating and making that kind of a mess. Especially in an engine that had some sludge to begin with.

I've been told many times that I should run it. I've also heard it's practically just non-detergent 50wt oil. Either way I'm glad to have some confirmation that I shouldn't be running it. Not that I ever really considered it.
its more like a non detergent 1000w! Only thing its really good for is in a new oil pump. It helps them suck oil immediately.

i do not think this was caused by lucas.

what i see in the pictures is classic polymerisation caused by vegetable oil. it happens when unburned veggie gets past the rings and down in the oil. the mix with heat causes this chemical reaction.

was this engine run on veggie ????

blackstone can definetely put this to rest, but i already am convinced what caused it looking at the pics.

veggie is wonderfull in a way, but very evil in others. it reacts in so many ways to metals its unreal. then you have the poly issue, and another weird one is that it creeps through the material of certain rubber hoses. only viton should be used when veggie is run.
on my truck i also seen heavy corrosion in the ip, what might have been water but i think it was caused who knows what acid since i run used oil, when running ****** veggie one has much fewer issues. my oil is dried to the max so thats why i am thinking it was not water. also since i always flushed with d2 upon every shut down.

I've had decent luck with lucas oil treatment, when used as per instructions. Working on a ranchers V10 dodge, it would lose enough oil pressure the light would come on, at a hot idle or especially lugging it (5 speed). Changed it over to 15w40, and it still did it, so I added a bottle of lucas, and he doesn't have the oil pressure problems (maybe a thicker oil would work, 20w50 etc). Its definately a bandaid fix in a bottle, but it does work in some cases.

I hadn't even thought of that! When I was working in a BioDiesel plant (La Grange, TX) several years ago, we over-heated an off-spec batch trying to dry it. We sold it as 'Bio-Solvent' to another BD producer, he tried to blend it off with on-spec BD to make cheaper BD. End result was clogging up a lot of valves and filters at his plant!

I had to do that with my dodge 360
