Anyone ever had a plugged exhaust?

I know the exhaust in these is terrible, but has anyone ever had one plug up?

Best I can tell I still have the factory exhaust from 91 on my truck (still has a Ford stamp on the muffler) and recently she's been getting way down on power. I'm running some hills in third gear and losing speed. Occasionally I'll have to drop to second gear.

I would suspect the IP but I have no hot start issues, it's ONLY a loss of power.

She was pretty smokey for a while there before we fixed the bad injector. I'm sure there's plenty of soot in it either way. We just need to make it home.

Yep. That's what Nomufflers would do. Oh who am I kidding? I'd do it too. After this many years, I'd bet that the original muffler is getting pretty plugged up.

Hack it off, see how it does... and then(if you don't have a turbo) install a flow-through glasspack style muffler.

Well I'm sure it's packed but luckily it started running better on the next tank of fuel. I'm pretty sure my main problem was bad fuel. It ran but not very well. Much better now!

He's N/A so he'll be loud and proud all the way home... my brain says it's hard to believe that it could be so plugged up but I've heard of it a few times on the forums.

Naw. Wont be plugged. Bad fuel is extremely rare these days.maybe a winter blend or a tank of hot diesel? Thats when the tanker hauled gas then loaded with Diesel. Dilutes the diesel with gas

Honestly money is the only reason I haven't yet! Now after this trip I have to buy 4 tires too...

I got some exhaust stuff from another member here. I have to figure out exactly what I'm going to do. He had true dual 3" and I'm not sure if I'm going to adapt it to my y-pipe (he had headers) or just run single 3".

I was going to run a glasspack on the stock setup but didn't get around to it yet.

If it was me, I'd be leaning HARD toward using the dual exhaust and your existing Y pipe. You already have most of the exhaust so it would probably be the cheaper way to go. Either way will be better than the restrictive factory muffler.

Is 3" going to be too big for duals? I'm not talking about that backpressure BS I'm talking about efficiency as far as exhaust pulse scavenging goes. I know on gassers if you go too big you sacrifice torque.

I also am hesitant because I want to put a turbo on when I can afford it. I guess I really should stop using that excuse because I should just bite the bullet and do a 4" kit when I get a turbo...

I see two choices here. 1) you can use what you have for now to get some gain over stock. 2) you can install a 4" now and then hook into it when you install your turbo. Spend a little now, or spend a little more later. That's my .02, for what it's worth (i know, maybe not much;)).

That's fair. I've always heard the place in the Y where the pipes merge is the biggest bottleneck, partly because it's more of a "T" than a Y.

What can I say, I'm very good at overthinking LOL

I was thinking that it's also pretty restricted in the bends there too. That's why I suggested using the duals at first. That way, either you can eliminate the Y completely or at least have only one side going through the restrictive bends. That would depend on how you hook into the duals. It won't hook up the same way that the headers that it was designed for did.
