Going thru some ZF gear boxes trying to pick a good candidate for my next T-19 to ZF swap. Im looking at a 1990 build date S5-42 that's built in Germany and a 1995 build date one that's built in the U.S.

Are there any differences in quality with the two build loactions?

Although anecdotal, I have always heard that Germany is the place to get transmissions, the quality is almost always substantially better. As to the ZF5 specifically, I could not say. I would er on the side of caution and pick up both. If you were stateside, I'd tell you to ship one of them to me. Just make sure they are for a diesel.

Yup that's my thoughts I am going to go German built. It is higher mileage but seems to be tighter then the US one. I do own them both, both are out of diesels.

FWIW, I have a ZF-LSD in my 73 VW Thing! They were doing LSD's since the late 60's, they are sought after and command high prices!
