torque spec for water pump pulley bolts

Hi,

I have a 93 7.3L IDI (F250) and i am in the process of installing a new water pump. My repair manual shows the torque spec for the water pump bolts, and the elbow.

My manual says to torque the pulley bolts to the standard torque. So, I found an area with standard torques based upon nominal thread diameter.

my question.....does anyone know the nominal thread diameter on the 4 bolts holding the pulley on, or better yet, do you know the torque specification for those 4 bolts? They seemed to be on pretty tight when I took them off.

Thanks in advance...

The bolts that hold the pulley on are 3/8". All of the bolts that hold the water pump onto the block are 5/16". I don't know what the torque spec would be but I usually use the "*** tight" method. Here's a little trick that I learned the hard way back in the 90's. Assuming that you're installing a new or rebuilt water pump, before you try to install the fan shroud or upper radiator hose, install the fan and run it in two or three threads. A lot of times, the threads aren't real clean and make it kind of hard to the fan. Especially when you're trying to hold the shroud and start the fan at the same time. This method will give you more room to work with the fan. After you do this, take the fan back off and install the shroud and fan at the same time.

thanks for the tip on installing the fan.....i ordered a new fan clutch, too.....so once it arrives, i will do what you mention above, and then i will remove it and attach the fan blades and install the shroud and clutch/fan together.

also, thanks for the info. on the bolt sizes....my manual is showing 24 ft lb for 3/8, and 14 ft lb for 5/16th.....although I believe the manual stated 19 for the water pump bolts, which overrides the standard chart I am using for the pullley (per the manual).

It's important to do my trick when you get another fan clutch too. If you can, it's easiest to do when the water pump's not inside the engine compartment. If you haven't installed the water pump yet, here's another trick. Take a flat file and run it gently over the gasket mating surface. Sometimes there can be burrs on it and you'll be able to see the lighter colored material when you take them off. I try to spread out my fingers to get even pressure on the file. I started doing this when I had a water pump leak on a 6.2 Chevy. Those are a PITA to replace compared to our engines.

I see that you're from Durango, CO. If you have any toys, I'm planning to go back to Taylor Park in the middle of August to go ATV riding and camping. You could feel free to come up and visit.

14lbs torque on water pump to front plate fasteners(19Nm). 4 bolts to seal with pipe thread sealant.

Also cut a piece of cardboard to fit the radiator on the inside. Keeps fan from damaging radiator if it falls during removal or installation of fan if radiator is still installed.

yes, i already put permatex, new gasket, and torqued to 19nm., and put permatex on the 4 bolts.....thanks for the cardborad suggestion, the clutch and fan and shroud are a bit awkward to hold and screw on.

IDIBRONCO....thanks for the invite.....no toys at the moment. August is pretty booked with people visiting me, but if time opens up , I will let you know....I think that is up by crested butte, so its several hours away.

I already have the pump installed per the manual, but I will twist the clutch on when it arrives this week and then back it off and istall blades and then put it back with fan shroud.

thanks.

Just be aware that the 4 middle bolts(marked "seal these bolts" on the diagram above) have only a thin welded nut on the back of the front cover plate, and can easily strip out if you over torque them. The rest have a lot more threads and can handle more.
So, just be really careful with those middle 4.

Actually, we'll be close to the Taylor Park Trading Post which is close to Cottonwood Pass, west of Buena Vista. It's farther away than Crested Butte, but I don't think it's a lot farther.

I got my new pump, thermo, and fan clutch installed. I got everything put back together......started it, let it run, drove it 40 miles....no leaks at all......

one thing I am wondering about, is the temperature gauge. i have never seen it go past about 1/4 up....but now, it went up to 1/2, and even closer to 3/4 going up hills (it was 90 degrees outside). Then, it went back down to around 1/4 or so....is this normal, or may i possibly have air in the system? I had to add about 4 or 5 gallons of antifreeze to top it off.

I'd say that you may have had an air pocket in the system. Don't worry a lot about what the factory temp gauge says. They are barely better than an idiot light.

I also used a 1st gen powerstroke oil filter and changed the oil.....I just found a topic regarding using the 1st gen PS filter....bigger and better I guess....and wal mart had it in stock for under $10.

I've started using it too after my recent overhaul. I couldn't care less about the extra quart of oil capacity. for me it's all about the better filtration given by the FL1995 oil filter. Better oil filtration means longer engine life to me!:Thumbs Up:cheers::rock:
