Lets see:
1. Varying pressure at the IP inlet affects timing. It really does. The ford mechanical pump, for me, was pushing 3-4 PSI from the outlet of the filter, from idle to WOT at max RPM. Excellent stability.

2. Cold advance helps, especially with a relatively retarded timing setup. Some pumps/timing setups don't need it, some do, especially when you are dealing with worn equipment.

So i just got done puttin in a new injection pump, injectors and motor craft glow pugs. I expected my truck to fire right up.

No!

Still needs ether to start up!!!

I have no leaks from filter to injectors.glow plugs are cycling I hear I click of in about 30-45 seconds like normal. When it fires up it is smooth no hesitation, plenty of power. Cruises down the road great. With the new fuel system now it runs better then it ever did! If I give it wide open throttle the filter light does not come. No stumbles no misses go fuel economy. What the hell is going on here!!! I run a Duralift electric pump in the engine bay. Fuel pressure gauge is 9-12 psi at idle cruising is around 3-4psi wide open throttle 1.5-2psi. Could be something moth my tanks? Selector valve sucking air anything else bad fuel filter? Help please?!

Have you checked your injection pump timing? Sounds like it may be slightly retarded to me at first blush...
Sometimes it helps if you press the accelerator pedal 1/4 depression while cranking after glow plug cycle and wait to start lamp extinguishes. Also ensure that your glow plugs are actually within resistance parameters and receiving proper voltage and amperage during initial start cycle. Do not use ether try a new can of wd40 instead it has more lubricity to avoid hot starts or premature wear on rings and turbo cartridge.

Chris, You said you could hear the glow plug solenoid cycling. Did you ever text to make sure the glow plugs where getting voltage?

I have the same issue, I have replaced everything on this engine and still it wont start without either. But only difference is , once mine starts, I can shut it down and it will fire back up on its own. When it sits overnight, it need a little puff to start.

You might try rigging up a manual GP override button; hold it on for like 15 seconds and then crank.

From past experience, really low compression motors won't pop on ether, but will fire with enough glow time.

Timing being off, though, I've had that be startable with ether.

Got a good deal on a '93 F250 IDI Turbo. New batteries, glow plugs(not Motorcraft), electric fuel pump, return line caps/o-rings, installed manual button to bypass glow plug controller...... and it still didn't want to start! Guess what...solenoid for glow plug controller was clicking but not making contact internally. Discovered this when I jumpered across the controller. New solenoid installed for ~ $12, and she starts all the time, everytime.

Been about a week since Chris was in here. I wonder if he got it figured out?

I am having this same problem. Mine’s not drive able when started because it doesn’t seem to be injecting enough fuel into the cylinders.
How/where can I get help in Northern Oregon?
