The truck runs wonderful in the winter, in the summer when truck is heated up, not over heating just normal running temp it will not want to start. It starts right up in the am but if I go in somewhere and restart in 5 or 10 minutes it starts right back up but if it sets for half hour or so it doesent want to start until it cools down. 7.3 non turbo automatic transmission, ual tanks front one deosnt work...Thanks for any help you all can provide

How many miles on the truck/IP?

If the mileage is over 125-150,000 miles, it sounds like the classic hot start issue and is time to have the IP rebuilt. A test would be, when it won’t start hot, pour some ambient temperature water, NOT COLD WATER, on the round part of the pump all the injection lines connect to. If it then starts, the IP will need to be rebuilt.

If/when you get the IP rebuilt, please use one of the know good vendors:

@Thewespaul - Wel - Classic Diesel Designs
@Agnem - Mel - Conestoga Diesel Injection
@typ4 -Russ
Justin - R&D IDI Performance

Getting a pump from one of these sources is your best choice. Getting one from your local auto parts store, or from the cheapest place on the internet will just cause you headaches.

Yes 201k to be exact, Im sure pump is expensive. Do you know of anyone around Louisville kentucky reputable to install? Im almost certain I could do install but have heard they have to be timed?

Thanks for the mention Scott, sounds like classic hot start issues with the injection pump needing to be rebuilt. Do the water test that was previously mentioned, and see how it acts. If the pump is really worn out, sometimes the water won’t even help but usually if you pour enough on it it should start. These injection pumps wear at about the same rate as the injectors do, so it’s recommended to replace both at the same time, a bit pricey but it transforms a poor running idi having a fresh fuel system.

Take a look at the top of the page in this section there’s a pinned thread called the “tech articles” one of the threads in that section is a list of forum members around the globe who have timing equipment and are willing to help time your truck. Check there to see if anyone is local to you. If not, Gary- @icanfixall rents timing meters to do it yourself.

Replacing an IP is not real difficult. I also had a sudden onset of hard hot start. It occurred in W VA, I live in SoCal. It started in a restaurant parking lot and got terminal at the end of a back country State Park.

At the time I was preparing to add a turbo and was carrying a turbo calibrated IP. So I swapped the pump. I just tried to put the pump where the original was. And then a storm blew trees across the exit road. But eventually we drove it home.

When you replace the IP and injectors be prepared for a new career trying to stop leaks.

As for timing. I have a Tach-n-Time, and both mag pickup and a serious timing light. After I put in a fresh engine I had the timing all over the place. I finally settled on a spot that happens to be no rattle after warm up. I could have done that without all the gear.
