92 f250 7.3 idi non turbo

Hello all I’ve been creeping for sometime decided to make my first post. So this morning when I woke up went to fire my truck up as usual then have my coffee. It started cranking like normal then made a very loud pop and wouldn’t crank sounded like the starter wasn’t engaging. Played with the starter tapped it and got it to crank over when it did start it was tapping like crazy and a lot of blue smoke was billowing out of the exhaust pipe and there was a small spot of what looked to be oil under my exhaust tip. Now with that being said what would be some main causes for it to not want to crank over after the loud pop and what would that loud pop of been. This is a great site and has helped before but I can’t seem to find anything relative to my situation thank you all!

Welcome to the forum Travis, that doesn’t sound well and you probably know where I’m getting to with this... but did it happen to rain last night where the truck was?

Yessir that’s what it sounds like. When it rains ******* these na engines if your cowl seal isn’t in good shape water puddles up on top the intake. If the grommet for the bolt on top of the intake doesn’t seal perfectly it fills the back two cylinders with water. I would pull the valve covers off and look for broken valve springs, loose rockers or bent pushrods. If everything looks good with the valvetrain I would say broken or bent connecting rod.

That’s exactly what I was afraid of. I don’t have the means or time to fix it right now so looks like I’m on to the next one.

That’s a shame, sorry to hear that. Hope you’re getting another idi, sounds like you have an otherwise solid truck.

If the damage isn’t to extreme I’m gonna look into a rebuild kit. But in the mean time no daily for now and if I do grab another one it will be an idi

I am going to guess you are in eastern PA since I was in Philadelphia yesterday and drove home in that mess.

I have not had any dealings with him but on FB in the IDI group there is a guy in Dover, PA that tends to have parts and engines. There is also a couple NEPA guys that tend to have connections.

Sure, just forget about me joe.... lol
Forgot you are on here also! (I really don't consider you part of the NEPA crowd - That is more Brandon and Jonathan, although you are up that way!)

As many times as I am over on that side I should just visit ya. I am in Paoli pretty much twice a week. Will be in Warrington Saturday morning for the Hot Wheels Legend Tour.

I had the exact same thing happen on a brand new 6.9 with only maybe 1,000 miles on it. Had head studs too!

In my case it blew a piece of the head gasket OUT on the ground and blew several freeze plugs out on the ground.

Dumped all the coolant in an instant and I heard it made a heck of bang! On tear down that piston was down on protrusion a bit.

So I pulled the valve covers and no broken springs and the rockers are tight the push rods are in their respective places but some of them are cocked to the side. I’m gonna take the rockers off and pull the rods to see if any are bent it’s starting to lean more towards bottom end which confuses me because the tapping sounds to be on the top end. So for now I have a tarp over the engine to prevent any more water intrusion fingers crossed it’s just a bent push rod.

My bet is bent or broken rod. Been there done that, same situation. Went to start, engine would not turn over, instead of thinking something was wrong, I got on the starter & it cranked. Shaking but not knocking. Bent rod. Needed a rebuild anyway, just not an unplanned one. I keep a mat over the air filter now.
I know, turbo would not let that happen.

I hope it is just a bent rod also.
