It seems like a lot of 6.9 & 7.3 have problems with white smoke i have read a lot about the white smoke on different forms. I'm new on this site so if I'm doing this wrong please let me know. I have a 84 f250 with 6.9l rebuilt 30 over have been working on it for 2 years (been taking my time) got it back fired it up, ran nice and smooth for about 15 minutes and started smoking and missing, leave overnight, start next day no glow needed, starts clean and smooth for 2 minutes and back to white smoke. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to Oil Burners! Do a search for 'white smoke on start up" and see what you find.

Welcome to the forum, great place to get the help you need.

As mentioned before could be air in the lines. Have you set your timing yet?

Yes confirmed timing. I did not think air bubbles would do that but i will try clear pipe and see. Thank you.

Sorry it takes me a while to get back on here, i have five kids they take priority over my truck. I have check for bubbles in fuel lines, double checked timing, still a lot of white smoke. I decided to run it longer and i noticed at startup almost not smoke at all. At 110° engine temperature smoke starts with a miss on one or two cylinders not a hard miss but a soft miss. When engine misses big puff of white smoke. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank you.

What is it timed at right now? Did you replace the pump and injectors when you rebuilt the engine? If so where did they come from?

No, the pump and injectors were cleaned up and put back in, they were good when the engine went down. I used diesel fuel to clean them.

What’s it timed at? Sounds like you have a sticking injector. Diesel is not the correct way to clean these injectors.

Diesel fuel for cleaning the injectors is what my dad always told me to use, he was a diesel mechanic all his life, he passed away last year. So he can't help me now i just go by what I remember he told me, unfortunately he didn't tell me how to fix white smoke.

Hang on... Once it's warmed up and starts missing, run a jumper wire to the cold advance solenoid wire(the rearmost terminal on the IP), you can just use a clip lead from the FSS(front terminal).

How does that change it?

It’s fine for cleaning the outside of the injectors, but any little bit of crud that gets into the inside of the injectors will cause an issue. I had a customer who sprayed the injector down with white lithium grease and that was enough for them to have issues sticking open. You could try running some heavy fuel cleaner like diesel extreme and see if it clears up.

You've drained the fuel filter, right(make sure there's no water in it)? If not, it's worth a shot - refill with ATF and reinstall.
