i can check that. i can rev it to 3k with easily 20 psi of boost and its half or less then what it makes at 2k and 10 psi.

i have two more cars to haul and ill see if i can get a vid.

to add its really a pretty loud sound to hear over everything.

20 lbs of Boost ? Is this an IDI we are talking about ?

Yes, it’s an IDI, but he has done a lot of work to this truck. It’s a “hot” pump, intercooled, with a custom hood for the cooler, a ball bearing turbo, and the biggest surprise, a straight pipe exhaust...... LOL

i started to finally dig into the ticking sound. i did an oil change, drove it and right around the 10 psi area i still hear it. i took the drivers side valve cover off and pulled the valve train out. everything looked good and nothing was loose. didnt notice much side to side on the top of the valves. push rods are strait and rockers look good. no lifters were soft from what i can tell.

got some pictures so point out anything that doesn't look right. i will be taking the other side apart soon.

just a thought, is it possible a lifter or so could be not holding under a load or maybe getting soft with more stress causing a tick? its a pretty fast pace sound. i have some vids just need to post them up.

hmm possibly. ill have to check. seems to sound higher up but who knows.

Mine was making an awful sound too, thought it was on top so I suspected turbo. Turned out to be the flex plate, but it was opposite of yours, heard it at idle, went away at +/-1500 rpm. Still worth a look.

Use a shop vac to blow air into the intake via the intake hat, then rotate engine over by hand and listen for a hissing valve?

What is the spot toward the bottom of the valve cover on the right hand end? Was something hitting it causing your noise? It looks like it to me. I could be wrong though.

Do you have upgraded valve springs?

I ran into a case a few years back overdriving my Banks turbo. Floored it up a hill, got 22 PSI out of it... and motor started ticking/loping. Turns out I bent a pushrod on the exhaust side, due to massive exhaust backpressure - it held the exhaust valve open enough to (evidently) let the lifter pump up, and then the piston smacked it and bent the pushrod.

Might the same thing be happening here - high pressures and weak valve springs allowing the lifter to pump up enough for the valve to just kiss the piston at that RPM. Under higher RPM, the lifters will pump down normally, so the added pressure may not be enough to hold it open enough to kiss the piston.

Edit:
Oh, and back then, I tried it again after upgrading the valve springs and... nothing.

i do have 910 springs. its a random thing that i just suddenly started hearing. i just got a 50 psi gauge to accurately see my boost. i have yet to get over 1,000 on the pyro. i max the gauge out so im assuming 20 psi

Just curious, did you check pop pressure on the injectors? Maybe you have one that the spring got weak and is popping early causing more injection rattle on that cyl.

i have no way of checking myself but i was thinking that was a possibility. i would have to take them all out and send them to mel or someone. can an injector rattle like that?

I'm not quite sure, but it was just a thought. Maybe give Mel a call and pick his brain on it.

We talked a bit, and I'll wait to hear the video, but I'm pretty sure this is an exhaust leak between the head and turbo on one side or the other.
