Would the idi community be interested in a modified “hot rod” version of the mechanical lift pump if I put one out there? Personally I prefer the benefits of going all electric but I know there’s plenty of guys who would rather keep their truck all mechanical.
I buy one every 2 years if I could get one with a little more flow behind it and reliability if swap it in a heartbeat

I'm not in the hot rodders group, but if you had some way of getting good and reliable mechanical fuel pumps I'd be all over it. I'm still running my original lift pump at 322k miles, who knows how much life this thing has left in it. I want to replace it, but I've lost the new part lottery so many times that I just don't want to deal with it until I have to LOL

I'm with you on the new parts lottery I've bought new starter batteries Gp's fuel pump and gp relay since January of this year I figure by the time all the cremlins are gone I'll have a fresh used 25 yr old truck.

+1 on no airtex chiacom garbage...
Subscribed, as my faccet crapped the bed pulling i5 North.

Can the e pump stay in line before the mech. Pump as a feeder without issue???
I have my facet pump plumbed in just after the mechanical one and mounted on frame just behind radiator. Its been this way for last 50K with no issues (or check valves or other mods).
I ran facet only for a while and ran into starvation issues with WVO. I actually hooked the mechanical pump back up on the side of the road when towing heavy with wvo and they have been working together just fine since then.
I do have 11 psi of fuel pressure at my filter head, but set the timing using the pulse method with that pressure and haven't seen any issues.

I would be interested. The beauty of these trucks is the ability to run with limited electrical assistance and could actually run with no electrical assistance beyond a starter and glow plugs.

Why is anyone messing with parts store stuff when the factory stuff is still available?
E3TZ-9350-B

Because when your in a pinch you have to get what's available right then. The stealership here doesn't stock crap for these anymore and usually takes 3-7 days to get it..

That's why I learned early on to keep a spare on hand. I bought a cheapo to use short term if/when the good one goes. the cheapo works until I get the good one then swap in the good one and store the cheapo again. They aren't that hard to swap and I don't have to wait. Do the same with throttle cable, just in case.

And power to the injector pump.

Power is needed to turn on/off the fuel solenoid/supply. That could be done with a lever manually like my old Massey Ferguson tractor. I guess if we wanted to be really primitive we could crank it by hand like old Henry Ford and start a small fire under the oil pan to warm her up. lol

Yes you could use a manual fuel shut off, but I was thinking about fewer modifications. I, for one, would not want to crank one of these engines over by hand. You'd need a handle about 5' long from the center of the crank and I'd NEVER be able to get enough RPMs out of it to start the engine.

That's what a 5-speed and parking on a hill is for! Did that for a long time years ago before I could get an IP that wouldn't hot-start. Of course I didnt know about the cool water trick then, doh.
Did you know you can roll-start even in reverse? Makes sense but most people don't think of it.

Did the reverse roll start off a car trailer on my old 63 when the battery died then again down my driveway. Worked pretty slick even on an old tired 292 y block...

Thanks for this!! That's pretty much what this thread was for, no need for aftermarket crap for me. I'll keep the facet for priming and just incase this mechanical pump craps out, it'll still drive just fine till I can swap out. But should last 20 years anyway, eh?
Never thought I would be so happy about a mechanical lift pump...

Edit: already ordered it up!
