I have a 1999 Mercedes e300 with a cel. I'm looking for a scanner that will work on this year. The scanners I've found only work on diesels 2001 and up. Someone please point me the right direction. I've used my old scanner for years but it won't work on a diesel.

Well I did the disconnect the battery, honk the horn a bunch and turned on the lights. Waited like 1/2 hour and hooked up the battery and the cel was still on.
Bought a Bluetooth obd2 scanner. Can't get it to communicate. Also bought turbo pro to work with the scanner. After many attempts I decided to try out the scanner and turbo pro on the buick. I've done a few modifications including headers and got a cel that my old scanner would take off but would return within a day.
The Bluetooth scanner got connected and then the turbo pro started to work. Keep in mind this was the first time I've tried both of these. So much information. It was like a video game. Anyway I scanned for codes and there were 3. I knew About 2. O2 sensors didn't like the headers. But I did the mods that were supposed to clean things up. They did but the cel kept coming back with the old scanner. The other code was the crankshaft positioning sensor.
I cleared the codes with turbo pro and the cel hasn't come back on.
That told me the scanner and turbo pro work fine.
Did some more research and found out the 7.5 fuse in the fuse relay junction box could be blown causing the obd2 port to not communicate. I checked and the fuse was fine. I then removed the fuse relay junction box. Took the bottom off. Resoldered the board which has been known to fail. Put it back together and the obd2 port still won't communicate with the scanner.
The conclusion so far is the Bluetooth scanner isn't the problem. There's a problem with the obd2 port.
If anyone has a suggestion I'm up for that.
BTW the Bluetooth scanner and turbo pro is fantastic. Not only does it kick out a code but it tells you which one. Plus it has a bunch of other features.

I tried the 38 pin to obd2 16 pin adapter with my scanner. Wasn't able to establish communication with the Mercedes ecm. Thought this might work but no.

Had a very cheap scanner I bought for a dodge. Not near as nice as my primary scanner. But the more expensive scanner wouldn't communicate with the ecm. Well one day I thought to trying the el cheapo scanner and much to my surprise it worked.
Got 6 codes. Bought an egr transducer and a maf sensor. Cleared the codes and that's all it took.
Didn't need to buy an expensive scanner after all.

Update
I finally got around to replacing the crankshaft position sensor on the Buick. Been leaving a cel for about a year. Engine began to cut out then restart as long as you were going 20 miles an hour or more. But when slowing to a stop if the sensor kicked the ignition signal off the car would just die. That was a wake up call.
Changed the cps and the car shifts much better and the ignition interruption problem is fixed.
I found out this problem happens around 80k to 150k miles. Very common. I also replaced the camshaft position sensor while I had the harmonic balancer off.
Don't wait to replace the cps if you get a cel code.
The roof analogy, when it's raining and the roof is leaking you're thinking about repairing the roof. But when it isn't raining it doesn't seem to matter. That's pretty much what went on.
