Oil Catch Can Drain Point

Hi All
I'm fitting an oil catch can to the truck and I was going to drain it back through the cover plate where the mechanical fuel pump used to be.
Has anyone used this spot to drain the oil back?

The oil caught from the catch can you don’t want to drain back to the pan, you want to drain and dispose of it. The catch can also needs to have some vacuum to work properly, so the routing should go from crank case to catch can to intake preturbo. The drain should be accessible so you can put a water bottle underneath it to catch the accumulated oil.

My bad. I was a bit short on details. My plan is to put the catch can into tho hose between the crankcase vent on the front of the injection pump cover and where it attaches to CDR valve on the intake to the banks turbo so it will be a closed system and the oil collected from that I was going to drain back to the engine. Is there issues with draining the oil collected by the catch can back into the engine?

The only dumb question is the one never asked! In your case I would do away with the stock cdr complete. Make something to block off the cdr mount and weld a barb onto it. Mount the catch can above the highest point of the engine and it will allow all of the oil to drain back naturally if it’s a properly baffled can. What physically collects in the can should only be from what liquid the baffling pulls from the crankcase gas which from what I’ve read isn’t what you want in your oil.

The catch can is a provent 200 with 1" inlet and outlet. It doesn't have much of a reservoir to hold what it catch's, so I'll make something removable for it to drain to, rather than the engine.

Cool man, post some pictures when you get it setup, I think these engines could really benefit from a good catch can setup over the cdr.

I've made a a flange with a nozzle to fit where the CDR valve used to bolt to the alloy casting on the inlet side to the turbo. I haven't had a chance to do anymore with work being busy. It'll be at least another week before I get a chance to get back to it. The next thing will be to make a bracket to mount the catch can,then modify the hoses.

If you are getting a ton of oil coming through here, you might want to move your CDR intake from the crankcase vent to the valve cover like they do on the ATS/factory turbo kits.
Add a baffle on the inside of the valve cover, and a hole through one of the round flat spots on it. This should reduce the amount of oil getting through the CDR system.

The problem with the front cover slot is that the gears right behind it are slinging a lot of oil around - from the oil pump down in the sump all the way up to the IP gear. So you get tons of droplets splashing around and getting picked up by the blowby gasses.

Now... nothing like this will "fix" having oil in your turbo(that's just typical of all IDI turbo setups with crankcase gasses), but it should reduce oil usage.

Hey Macrobb, could you post a pic of the valve cover vent if you can. I agree with the fact a lot more oil gets sucked up by the blowby gasses mounted on the front cover. I feel I get a ton of oil coming through on mine, and would like to relocate to the valve cover. thanks!
