It’s really not a big repair, but being in a van you don’t have a ton of room to work with. The hole or covering it doesn’t concern me, but directly under that valley pan is your hydraulic lifters, which don’t bode well with any contamination. You can start it up to make sure it runs before you tear it apart, but I would avoid running it much.

Honestly, the hydraulic lifters are on both sides, above the "trough" made by the valley. What I would expect to happen is that crud would end up in the oil pan, get sucked up by the pump and end up in the oil filter. Still not a good idea to get stuff into, but less of a problem for dust and such.

edit:
I suspect that you'll find it contained to mainly the rear of the motor due to that being the lowest spot and where water might pool.

Personally, I haven't seen(in person) a single valley pan with rust on it; all the ones I find are covered in a nice protective layer of oily crud.

If you're in a hugging mood, Wes would probably be the closest one to you. Wes?;Poke

That’s typical for engines that have set for a long long time with water on the engine. You will need to remove the injection pump, intake manifold and injection lines. Mark the pump where it’s at now and realign it when you’re done. Water pump stays in place, you don’t even need to pull the valve covers off. Here’s a picture of what it looks like without the intake in place.

Just want to say a big Thank You! To @Thewespaul for posting pictures like this in threads all over; clean, easy to see representation for the rest of us that dont tear these engines down often, or ever. I appreciate it!!

Doc confirmed my belief that he was a corn snake. I got a few shots and a clean up and good to go. I'm ok just kinda upset that I missed him being under there with me. Like ole Sgt always used to tell us, complacency kills

Wes Posted one in post #106 at the top of this page.
OU, IDI BRONCO, NEED A BEAR HUG AT THE NEXT OILBURNERS RALLY.
Well a Texas one would be the closest to me and I haven't made it to one of those yet. Wes isn't going to organize one this year. Hopefully somebody else will so I can try to make it again this year.

Here's one. DO NOT plan it around me. I may not be able to make it. I'm just making suggestions here. Maybe you should make a thread about this if you're serious. That way you could see how much interest there is. As for me. I wouldn't even need a campground if you know a good spot out in the boonies. I'm pretty easy on that kind of thing.
