E-Fan/OE FAN Delete/CONVERSION/w. Serpentine Belt/3G Alt. on a 94_Ford_Cargo_Van_e350_7.3L_IDI_Naturally_ Aspirated.

Adding E-fans and fan delete on ford van is going to be a challenge and so Id like feedback from others as I think this thru based on truck owners here that have done the conversion and all of us who havent but are considering this as an option.

Bottom line is here, in this THREAD topic, we are going to discuss the options available to delete the fan clutch, and OE fan and a add a variable speed manual/electric thermostatically controlled 2 electric fan system on a..... 94_Ford_Cargo_Van_e350_7.3L_IDI_Naturally_ Aspirated.

I havent seen any other thread on the installation of electric fans on a 1 TON cargo van, so, Im attempting to create this topic to address the need for van owners.

Please be patient as this may take me some time to get parts and prepare, before I can actually do the conversion, so Ill add to this thread as time, parts and my health allows.

In the process of my research on how to gather materials and parts to do the conversion I will be adding links to re-compile a number of different threads into THIS thread where others have done the conversions of adding electric fans to trucks.

Some who have already done this conversion, also use a few different approaches to shrouds that work with 2 fans (either custom built or from a donor vehicle).

As I take my own pictures, I'll add them here as well and do my best to describe the photos and the process.

On the positive side, for me, I already have the serpentine belt system and the 3G ALTERNATOR so, I wont need to convert from 1G or 2G like some others will.

On the negative, on a VAN, unlike a pickup truck, I have no space to work this "MOD" in. The engine compartment is very TIGHT and condensed, plus, I have A/C, WHICH MAKES IT an even TIGHTER SITUATION for me.
In order to not have to "re-invent the wheel" I will honor and respect the others that have come before me and include as many other threads and any other info as I can find while doing my research to make this an all inclusive thread specifically for FORD DIESEL VANS, however most of the information I will link to will be truck conversions.

So, folks, its hit me hard, right on the noggin'. Ive done it...... now that I started this thread (1st step in a thousand mile journey) I guess Im committed, lol so it will eventually get done, at least that is my logic.

On the win side for me. I already have 2 almost new electric fans and a donor car fan controller from a 2001dodge grand caravan 3.3L sport that I upgraded the fans just before a catostrophic engine failure.

The radiator was installed a year ago, with new fans but the shroud was toast so the fans were mounted directly to/thru the cooling fins. I cant find the paperwork on the fans but I believe I remember them being good for either the 3.3L or 3.8L V6 so, I am pretty sure I'm good as far as fans go.

On the controller, honestly I have no idea how Im going to tackle that.

Im not great with auto electrical although I have the dodge caravan technician teardown and rebuild service manual and can read (pretty well) basic wiring diagrams and understand the terminology so, I hope all will go well and I'll be able to get thru this ok eventually, AND, on the positive, Ive got you great folks here on OB to refer back too.

WISH ME LUCK, as, at this point, this is where INSPIRATION, meets PERSPIRATION.....LOL

I have an E350 as well. Looking forward to your results.
I have planned to put in ebay efans. 3 different sizes. 17", 14", 2x 12"
I have all the parts but I havent had the time to do the install. I also have a 220 amp alternator.
Im thinking about putting in an extra water mister just incase of hard pulls.

I thought a little more today about how I'm going to mount the two 12 inch fans onto the 3 core aluminum champion cooling radiator. I'd ultimately like the new radiator install to be a clean, pro looking install but at as least $$ cost with using as many partsas possible that I already have on hand.

I think i'll track down a local CNC water jetter so they can cut the circles, (rather than me using a jigsaw) in the sheet of 3/16" aluminum treadplate I have on hand for the project. I hope that its not prohibitive in terms of $$$ to cut the holes in the material?!!

Once that gets done, I can mount the fans to the surface of the sheet of treadplate and mount the custom shroud to the fins cleanly or better yet, invent a secure mount directly to the radiator side supports.

With a full sheet of custom sized, cut aluminum as an flow isolation shroud , the fans will cool effeciently for there smaller size and at the same time the sheet aluminum will protect the cooling fins in the future when additional maintenance is required.

Thanks for chiming in. Welcome. Glad to have you following along. I am following your posts as well now to see what else you do with your van. Please posts some pics of your van and your engine bay in this thread. Maybe take a pic or two, or 3, of the parts you have on hand which may help others as they discover this thread in future years?

Its pretty late now. Im suppose to be awake for work in 2 hours. ill post pics later. I dont mind using my jigsaw to cut the holes. You wont see the jagged edges anyways. I will be tapping to the AC clutch and 1 ohm resistor. then a 200f thermostat for coolant sending full power to the fans. 210 thermostat for the misters. 2 manual override switch for both misters and fans. Total cost is around 170 bucks so far. Im gonna cut out a 1/4 mdf for mount first and see if it can handle the 4 fans running. Im gonna mount the fans at specific areas. 17" fan at the water inlet side. 14" fan at the transmission cooler. 12" fans are for the empty spaces in between. Ive seen a lot about how the mech fan is so much better because it takes 5 hp to turn it. I dont think you really need that much if your fans are efficient and a 2nd stage cooling system.

Great effort and many thanks for posting pics, some are not showing up for me anyway. Links show they are broken for the fan setup pics and a couple others in the suspension. I know its a PITA sometimes to upload pics because of size, extension, etc. anyway, thanks for sharing what you have.

Christian 9112:

My bad.

My issue was with my browser. I shut down everything and rebooted.

Now I see the 4 fans pics and other pics. All I can say is, SWEET setup.

I really like the 4 fan idea. Just by looking after reading so MANY threads trying to figure out my own approach to this project, my thoughts are it might be overkill adding all 4 fans based on optimum temp. settings for a diesel?

But, maybe in adding a ramp up thermostat controller that splits each fan or separated them in pairs would be optimum, just thinking out loud. I could be wrong.

I'm still learning about this setup and installation.

Anyway, I am stoked after hearing/seeing your ideas/plan and can't wait to see when you get it installed in your vehicle.

Plus, I have to add that I really do like all the extra features you have added as well.

I'm impressed and you've given me some ideas. Thanks!

Thanks. The fans would hopefully only turn on during traffic. which I do a lot here in LA. The fan modules are way too expensive for my taste. something like a $12 thermostat would do just fine for me.
Here's the inside. WARNING loud beeps

Hey Christian,
I hadn't looked profile in detail. Now i see you are in California, where all the cool MODs seem to come from, LOL. I also looked at your ambulance conversion profile pic. Hadn't before, but now that I've seen it WoW!, thats a sweet setup/ conversion you've started. Please when you have some time I'd love to see any other pics you have of your van.

On a different but similar topic , I was wondering if you might want to help me or participate with a new project I am working on.

A "VANS ONLY EXCLUSIVE" Forum. I didn't see one other than a van RV'er forum called VANDWELLERS on Tap-a-Talk so I created my own.

I've started it but will need advice from many others, like you, any help, posts and pics to help get others interested in participating would be great and I'd LOVE to see your conversion on the forum.

I would really value, and appreciate your feedback, even if you can't do anymore than that but if you could, that would also be great.

The forum on TAPATALK is called-

id: "ALLVANSGROUP"

I am the only registered member as i just created last night. It is a VANS only forum. A work in progress...
