I just changed the oil and all filters. Fuel filter was full. refilled with clean diesel and it still is starting hard. It starts and runs about a minute and dies. Then wont restart unless I crank hell out of it. I hate to change the fuel pump without knowing if it's bad or not, looks like a pain in the a$$ job. Some people say to put an electric pump on it. I read one post where the guy said to replace the manual pump AND put an electric pump inline. who should I believe. any advise would be appreciated.

Start the engine and depress the Schrader valve with a screwdriver while it's running. It should spray fuel across the engine to the IP at least in fast pulses. If not then your fuel pump is toast.
And yes the job sucks as you get a diesel bath. But find a way to pinch the lines closed and spillage is minimal.

where's the schrader? I've never seen a schrader on this engine.

The schrader is up on the block that the fuel filter screws onto.

It starts up, runs a little bit and then quits. Then you crank crank crank it, and it finally starts. Does it run ok after that?

No, it dies again. Someone must have changed this filter housing, there is no schrader. unless it's suppose to be where that set screw is. if you look at my avitar, thats the fuel tank on the wrecker body(silver). I checked the fuel and it smells like diesel and looks clean. I also just went under and check all my fuel lines. All are soft and relatively new. no leaks or cracks in any lines. On the drivers side frame rail , the line goes into some kind of "Block" that has 3 plugged fittings and a electric plug with 4 wires. You familiar with that. then a smaller line continues up to engine somewhere. on the passenger side the hose goes up to the fuel pump. all line look good. Any thoughts. Aside from the pump being bad, this things got me stumped.

Found the problem ! called around to try and find a Motorcraft fuel pump. There is none, this side of the Mississippi. So, next best thing , I go to Napa and buy a Carter pump. I installed the pump, hooked the hard line to the pump. The fuel tank on this truck has a ball valve on the underside of the tank, which I shut off, prior to removing the hose from the old pump. Before hooking the line to the new pump, I said I'm going crack that ball valve just to be sure I'm getting fuel thru that line. Opened the valve and not a drop came out. I looked in the tank thru the fill and couldn't see anything. There's a wall dividing the tank and the bottom supply port is on the other side of the wall (of course). I then took shop air and blew in the line from the front. Solid fuel pouring out now. So, there is something in that tank and no way to get to it. That's an aluminum tank that someone made. No openings at all. No gauge in it either. Unless I cut it open , I'll never get whats in there, out. I could probably take it to a welder and have him put a opening in it. But anyways, found the issue, probably should have started there, but I'm one that always work BASS ACKWARDS. Thanks all of you for your advise and help, it always a pleasure.

That looks like a filter housing for a van or International application, not for a pick up.

I have no idea where it came from,it was on it when I got the truck. It works ok when it's getting fuel. The green paint on it looks like a Detroit diesel color.

The International IDIs were painted a light blue (some people call it a green) and it does look similar to a Detroit color.

I found a used Ford filter head on ebay. I'm going to change it out. This thing is STILL giving me a hard time starting after all I've done to it. But at least it will start and run. I have to have air intrusion somewhere. I'm gonna start with the filter head and work my way back. What are these OLIVE fittings I'm reading about ? I checked all my hard line connections and they are tight.

The olives are basically a gasket to seal up hard line connections like where the two hard lines attach onto your International filter head. They get old and hard causing then to not seal properly. Sometimes you can just tighten the nut a little bit tighter and they will seal. Sometimes not.

That's what I thought, after what i read.....It's just a weird name for a gasket

They have the “nickname” of olives, because that’s what they look like. Most pump shops and probably the IH parts desk would know what you are asking for, if you call it an olive.

I think they actual name, or at least what Ford calls them is a “fuel line sleeve”.
