Can you swap a 6.9 v10 for a 7.3 idi without changing the bell housing?

What trans? Are we talking a 6.8 gasser for a 7.3? Or a 6.9 Diesel for 7.3? Don’t the v10s still use the big block bolt pattern?

Ah well that answers that. Still would be curious as to what engine the op is dealing with

Yes, wanting to swap a gas 6.8 v10 for a 1996 7.3 power stroke.

I have a 94 7.3t idi also. But I thought the power stroke would be closer.

The IDI and PSD had the same bolt pattern. The IDI would be the easier swap for sure. Less wiring to redo.
One of the really cool things about the IDIT(or OBS IDI) is that the harness is basically self-contained - Literally just apply battery power to the main glow plug terminal, and switched power to the glow plug relay's small "ignition" terminal... and the engine will run! The glow plug relay, the high idle, advance etc... are all connected and work perfectly as soon as you power that primary lead.
(which also means that you just need to find a single wire out of the motor harness connector to get it to run).

Powerstroke on the other hand... Break out the schematics and start pulling wiring harnesses.

if the V-10 is running the BBF pattern could it be drilled out like the ZF-5 type4 mod and made to work?

They do and they don't. The IDI's block pattern is hemisperical (SAE or native IH) and uses an adapter. The 7.3 PSD uses a spacer. On the transmission side, yes, the patterns are the same. I would make the Excursion manual. May want to investigate gearing. 4.30 ratio, as some of them had, may be less than desirable.

Big if. V-10 is part of the modular family... this post says its pattern is shared with modular V8s, 6.0L and 6.4L diesels
