I should apologize to medic265, think I'm pulling the thread off topic.
But think also that the IDI diesels are way more adaptive/ reliable then with a gas motor.
At first I was a little overwhelmed with diesel engines, but read & study, trial & error, find the OB online and its all good.

Maybe I annoy a lot of people, but I have always though of an original topic as a suggestion more than anything else.

I was thinking along the same lines as an automated shutdown to have clean diesel at the ready for restarts. My idea was a small 5 gallon tank with an electric pump relayed off the glowplug controller to introduce diesel directly to the pump.

In theory, pumping in an ounce or two at the hardline into the IP should allow an easy start on diesel. I have a one way valve between the lift pump and filterhead that would isolate the oil supply and protect the liftpump diaphragm.

Well, in each injection stroke you only move a few tenths of a milliliter, so it would take several seconds of cranking just to empty the low pressure section of the pump, and then the lines. I don't think you would see Diesel at the injector tip until it's too late etc.

Ah, good point about the fuel still in the lines. Scrap that idea.

But... you could use a small tank for fresh diesel... and plumb the feed and return to it with switching valves... start and shutdown on clean diesel.

No matter, you will have to shutdown on clean diesel for there to be clean fuel in the injector feeds. Its doable... but would take a bit more work then a single valve and electric pump.

I was once considering a small tank for clean diesel with a HEAVY dose of dieselkleen or seafoam so when coking was an issue, switch to the little tank and let it clean things up a bit... then back. Never did anything with it though.

You can get a vegtherm in-line 3/8 inch fuel heater with a thermal switch that heats to 170° then off and on again to heat your oil right before it goes to iP. Just google it.
