If the gasket is damaged replace it, don’t forget to put your coolant passage inserts in the gasket or you’ll be pulling those heads off again in no time. I don’t like to clean threads that aren’t damaged with a tap, it can weaken the threads. The chaser is worth it imo even if you are just doing this job once, but if you don’t want to spend the money, just take an old headbolt and cut a vertical slot in it and use that to clean the threads, don’t use a tap.
You even put them in a studded 6.9? I though the issue was with non studded early build versions seeping.

I know this is actually a hot topic in a different thread about the cooling mod, just wondering why block it if it already had it and your studding

The 6.9 and 7.3 headgaskets both come with inserts, the 7.3 blocks it off completely but the 6.9 gasket will have holes in them about the diameter of a ballpoint pin. When I build my engines I open this hole up a bit for more flow but it’s not required. It is a requirement to run the inserts for the water passages to seal.

The inserts only come on aftermarket gaskets, the factory gaskets have the seals built in, the aftermarket design works a lot better with the oring/mls design.

Years ago when I was doing engine rebuilding I bought a 7/16 tap , for 350 chevys, that was just a little undersize so it just cleaned the threads and didn't remove any material.

I cant even imagine what it would be like trying to do the right side with air. I did the left side on my 93 which was enough of a pain.
