In theory, the idea is great for nitrogen.
And I guess if it is "free," then go ahead. But definitely don't pay extra for it. Lol

Wouldn't do it even if it's free. Get stuck in small town America, where are you going to get your tire refilled?

You can always top them off with regular air. There's no harm in that at all. It's not like they use a special valve stem or something. You'll just have one that doesn't have nitrogen in it is all.

Thus defeting the purpose of the nitro.

I was always told not to mix air and nitro, don't know why as drcharles pointes out air is 78% nitrogen:dunno

To the OP.. that's interesting about the generals flexing. We had a brush truck I put them on and never really noticed. 300 gallon water tank and probably 400# of egipment, but it was also a dually and 80psi in the rears.

Ok here we go, why do all the aircraft tires have nitrogen in them. It doesn't change it's pressure with the change in the temperature and the Road hazard will pay for it self with one damaged tire. If you figure in the price of a set of tires.

The single and only purpose of nitrogen fill is to inhibit corrosion on the inside of the wheels. That's it, that's all.

Some years ago I personally read a popular automotive magazine boast about how nifty nitrogen fill is and that "nitrogen doesn't expand and contract under temperature variations like plain air" or some very similar statement. The very next week in the Letters to the Editors section someone wrote in exactly what @DrCharles wrote above: all gasses expand and contract with heat. They rescinded the statement but if course the big article was already written, and now its lore. Maybe it's from other sources too, I dunno.

Pure nitrogen doesn't fluctuate as much as air. In these old truck it's really no big deal. Where it helps is in newer vehicles with tpms systems.

Definitely wouldn’t pay for the nitrogen fill but if it’s free, I’m not going to tell them no. Hell the first Time I tow I mess it up changing pressure anyways lol. I think I got 3 free plug, patch, and rebalances on that road hazard in just 38k miles on those bfg’s so I think it’s worth it.

While I agree in theory, it also depends on the shop. Some places are good about honoring warranties and some will fight over every little detail. A GOOD tire shop yes, road hazard is worth every penny.

Any properly inflated 235/85-16 has enough sidewall to haul around an unloaded pickup, especially one as light as in the original post. Any unstable feeling people get with new tires is usually incorrect air pressure, or tread squirm. If the air pressure is good, give them 1000 miles for the tread face to square off, and they will be fine.

And no, sidewalls aren't all equal, even in 10 ply rated tires. But cant say that a tire that says 3 ply on the sidewall is better than a 2 ply.....Some of the 2 ply sidewall e rated tires have very thick sidewalls. You don't really get into a good heavy duty 235 85 16 until you hit the 200 dollar mark, and the really good ones are 300 plus.

Gonna have to disagree^. I just got my Goodyear a/t adventurer’s mentioned earlier and it is a night and day difference. Truck feels solid, normal, and most importantly safe. These goodyears at 60psi front/40 rear are like a sports car compared to the boat feeling of those general grabbers at 75psi. Not all sidewalls are created equal and I’ve found 2 ply’s aren’t enough for my truck. Thanks for the recommendation, if they last over 50k I’ll buy them for life.

Bilstein’s are on my list too. What psi do you run in these when empty?

The generals were like 830$ and I had to pay 279$ to switch into the Goodyear’s. Little over 1100$ for tires, mount, balance, and road hazard warranty
