Yeah, this just sucks all around. It sounds like you had more defective work done. The backing plate goes on the outside of the flywheel from what I'm reading, so I would assume if you didn't use it that the bolts wouldn't really be tight or they are but the flywheel isn't really tight to the crank and could be wobbling around some when not engauged and under a load from the engine.

Would I be right in assuming if this is true, he should probably not be driving the truck or even running it for fear of shearing off a bolt in the crank? Just trying to save further headache for him.

I have no idea what I am talking about, mind you. Just learning as I go before I likely also have this screwed up myself by someone I've never met named Les here in a month.

I’m definitely not driving the truck, except to try and diagnose this problem. It’s back at the shop now...

Forgetting the backing plate would cause that issue you describe. That’s where my money is now. I might even go over there before work and try to grab the flywheel and see if it is loose at all. I did not think to do that yesterday.

Wes is sending me a backing plate he has laying around the shop, and i’ve already got it worked out with him to balance my injectors in the event I ever get the truck home again lol

Heard back from the shop today.

The guy who pulled the transmission is on vacation until next week, but they had one or two other mechanics look at it and drive it. One has a theory that has some merit, the turbo up/down pipe is rubbing against the firewall or transmission tunnel. When you put a load on the engine, it twists up a bit and contact goes away. This would explain why it seems worse on deceleration too.

I also explained the backing plate issue and he agreed that could be a possibility. Anyway, they are going to look at it more next week and if need be, pull the transmission back out...

If that's true have them shove some home insulation in between it and see if it goes away. I've used that pink home insulation to stop vibrating exhaust systems on my cavalier since high school.

THERE IS A TRUCK IN MY DRIVEWAY!

It was the exhaust. The up or down pipe must have been tweaked during install. That was the problem. It was contacting the cab/firewall. Which explained why the sound went away with a load on the engine, and why it was worse with a deceleration load.

Thanks to everyone for the comments etc...

BY the way I am happy with the LUK 07225 kit. It makes a little noise if you really lug it around 700-800 rpm. Its really pretty quiet and smooth overall. Its perfectly quiet except for a little chatter at that low RPM. Which may get better after I get Wes to balance my injectors.

Wooo! Congrats. Glad to see it was something simple and not an issue with the backing plate, bet it’s nice to have the truck back.
