Thanks for reading... 86 6.9 with 150k on original injection pump. Engine was working fine all day, but died on the road. Got someone to pull me into a parking lot.
I'm not getting any power to the injection pump, key on or off. Should the wire to the IP shut off valve be hot with key on? What to do if no power to the IP? Can I bypass it with a jump wire to drive a short distance?
Just to clarify... Which wire controls the shut off? One clip has two red wires and the other has one yellow wire.
Thanks

Where are you broke down? Do your turn signals work with the key on? The ip should only have power when the ignition is on

I'm in Georgetown TX. Made a simple jump wire to the tab that the double red wire went to... Got the truck running and made it to a motel for the night. Still not sure why the wire lost power though...

Thanks for the fast reply Wes... To answer your question the blinkers, hazards and radio were all working when the truck died.

I've tied speaker wire from the positive lead and shoved it into the IP electrical connector using the other end.

Drove 60+ miles that way to get it home.

I ran a switch and bypassed the key on that truck.

If your blinkers work when the key is on your ignition switch is fine, I would look over the connector for the engine harness by the dipstick area and see if the two yellow wires got hot and melted the connector.

Let me know if you need any help or parts. My shop is about two hours south of Georgetown FYI. My number is 830-328-6548, happy to help any way I can.

My guess is the fusible link running power to the engine harness (IP fuel shutoff solenoid) burned up. Common pain in the butt with the bullnose IDI's. Lost mine driving to work one am. I ran a jumper from the battery to get it off the side of the road. Replaced it with a large blade fuse.

Hope you get it fixed and back on the road soon.

I had this same issue. I was driving down the road hit a bump and truck shut down. I couldn't find the original issue because my truck was an old farm truck that was all sorts of jacked up wiring. I found that the current wire had 12v but when I turned the truck over it dropped to nothing. I removed the column and found a wire that only had 12v when the key was in start. I jumped that wire and ran it all the way to shutoff on injection pump. I also made it a fuse able link under the column so if it blows I can get to it. I would suggest this.

Here are some diagrams for your 86 diesel. They are the good ones from the Ford EVTM.

http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/charge--power-distribution---diesel-engines.html

http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/start--glow-plug-control---diesel.html

In the second link, on page 47 up in the right hand corner of the diagram you can see the fuel shut off solenoid. You can follow it to the left and it is fed from fusible link "V". Go down in the link to page 49, in the list it tells you fusible link "V" is located on the right hand fender apron. It also lists pages that have pictures of the fusible link, if you want to hunt them up you can go to this link http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/1986-evtm.html

When you get to the fusible link "V" above, you will see it has a "page 22" beside it, that is the page you need to go to to continue following this circuit. Page 22 is in the first link in this post.

Click on the first link in this post, and get to page 22. If you look all the way to the left, you will see fusible link "V" repeated again and the reference to page 47 where we just came from. You can see it is fed directly from the ignition switch and then the two thick yellow wires from the starter relay post. Those yellow wires are probably good, that is why the other poster asked if your blinkers and other stuff was working.

No problem with running a jumper hot wire to the large spade connector on top of the injection pump. The connection you want power on is the connector closest to the radiator. the back connector is the cold advance in the pump. Only issue with a jumper wire is you MUST pull it off the connector to shut down the engine. If you do pull the wire please remember its hot all the time and will ground to anything it touches.
