Ive got a f350 460 gasser and put a 12v cummins in it. Ive read people say not to use steel gas tanks for diesel. I was wondering about the electric in-tank gas pumps. My plan was to put new in-tank prefilters on the front and rear pumps and use the stock ford pumps/selector in the cab, to supply diesel to the stock cummins filter and then thru the lift pump and on to the p7100. The stock Ford gas stuff has the return line and tank vents already there. Would that work?

I converted a gas tracker to diesel. I just drained as much gas as I could and filled it with diesel
I've installed new, after market gasoline tanks into 3 different diesel pick up trucks, theres no reason to not use your tank
personally, I'd probably remove the in tank pump and fab a pick up tube, but you should be able to draw fuel through it, just as it sits. it's probably not going to give the correct psi so you probably can't use it

the biggest issue with using gasser tanks is the in tank electric fuel pump but more importantly, the plating that is supposedly done to many tanks. I've cleaned out many ford factory steel tanks over the years and never found the said plating. just clean steel or slightly rusty steel. I do know diesel fuel will eat plating like candy, the chronic problems we have with our fuel senders is evidence of that fact. where does it go? onto our injector nozzles and needles where that and carbon causes degraded performance over time.

I have always "heard" that diesel fuel will dissolve zinc galvanizing. These molecules of zinc are then carried in solution in the diesel and end up in the IP and injectors, ruining those fuel system parts.

I picked up a bronco rear tank and they seller said it was a newer Spectra tank, which I guess using a different coating than zinc. I think I'll plumb this to run to the IP and forego the front tank for the time being. Apparently the in tank pumps dont put out as much pressure as EFI ones so I can run it without a regulator? I think I'm going to put a small Racor, like a 445 maybe?, before the IP. Is 2 micron too small?

What fuel pressure does the Cummins engine need for your application?

Since you have a "cummins powered Ford" now, it's a different game than fueling an IDI 7.3.

As I recall, the cummins fuel controls need different fuel pressure than the 7 to 11 PSI the 7.3 engine uses.

Your call..

Two of my three tanks are steel and started as gas in 2005.

I have been using a 2 micron Racor for at least 10 years. See two pics.
