Mine seems happiest @ 3000+ rpm. I often run it at those speeds on the hwy for hours on end.

I tend to run in the lower rpm range, probably being over cautious but cant get over this gut feeling that an engine only has so many rpms to give in its life cycle.

After like 3ish I don’t feel much more power happening, mine likes 2500-3000 for max power after that in 4th and 5th it doesn’t want to climb fast anymore. Also in 5th my speed gauge is basically touching the inside of the cluster and my big truck just doesn’t seem to like 90+ mph lol but those high rpms are good for taking off with some weight behind you or holding the gears to get up to speed faster

Ive driven big rigs and I prefer my engines to stay under 2400... that being said I have no trouble cruising at 2200 with my '89 F 250. However I'm only doing about 65 mph . I think it's 65, because my speedometer is off. . We have places where the speed limit is 80 and I stAy off those roads. Too many loco drivers

V8 diesels are built to spin. IH idi's make usable HP from 2k rpm and up. the stock governors were set to start defueling around 3300 rpm. Anybody who's owned a F450 idi will tell you that running pinned to the governor is a every day all day affair. as long as there is a load thrown on it, you're golden. hell, we've even had a very brave former member who posted a vid of his truck pulling to 4500rpm and was blissifully unaware the "sewing machine" sound was the motor telling you to either back off the throttle or shift.

Since I bought my first 7.3 in ‘90 I have always had a problem with high diesel rpm’s for some reason. It is just been hard for me to get used to running a diesel with high rpm’s. Even today. I am and old school truck driver from the late 60s, 70s, 80s and trucks were worked roughly 18 to 2200-2300 RPM mostly. Sometimes 2400 if we were running from the cops LOL But what I am saying I learned Back then on Cummins, Cat, Detroit, MAC using a lower RPMs, and it still gives me trouble to pull mine up to 2800 or more RPMs. Probably a mental problem ha ha Ran a Cummings 903 v8 one trip and they told me work it 2800-3400 rpm....was hard for me!!!
I went the other way. I learned on a series60 that was governed @1800. Later on I had a small can Cummins that was designed for 1700-2100.
