Funny how the higher end pickups don't have the double wall roof construction. Apparently that cardboard-backed felt headliner was a lot stronger than I thought LOL

So yeah, if your truck was a lariat, you could have easily pulled back the headliner and accessed the underside of the roof skin for nut and bolt fastening. I'm not even 100% sure if the thresh hold was on the lariat trim level, or xlt or some other criteria.

Nutserts work well if you can get good ones that are properly installed. Since this is the roof, I would have used stainless steel and insert them with some form of high quality urethane sealer. From what I can tell, the roof skin is not zinc coated steel, so rust would spread quickly depending on what climate you're in.

Looks like I don't have a photo of the front of the ceiling, but you get the idea. Only edge support, with some reinforcing bands going sideways across (a few more supports have been added in mine).

I think on the regular cab trucks, it had the full metal skin inside the cab. Out 83 was this way, it was painted body color. I think the extended and crew cab have open supports like in your picture. I've not had the headliner out in my 88, so I'm not sure how the cab roof is made, but my guess is its a full metal skin with the headliner over it. The 88 is an XLT Lariat, and the 83 was a "no package" truck.

I picked up some bolts yesterday. Started to drop the headliner and realized my truck has the double layer roof.... So I guess it's nutserts for me. It's a 1988 F350 CC 4x4 lariat Centurion.
