Coolant leak! Heater hose to head....

Just encountered a coolant leak. The heater hose going to the head sprung a leak. Hoses are all factory based on the factory crimps at the head, the tee, etc. (E4OD)

So I plan to replace them all...

Question... a quick glance with the flash light down at the head looks like a crimped connection to the head. Is this threaded? Do I cut the hose and unscrew it from the head or do I need to somehow cut the crimp off while on the head?

I'm sure I'll figure this out myself, but now its dark. Figured y'all could save me some heartache due to your experience!

All of the ones that I've seen use a hose clamp on this fitting. You can unscrew the fitting after removing the heater hose if you wish, but there's really no need. All you should need is a length of 5/8 heater hose.

Mine is just a nipple off the head with the hose clamped to it.

I also deleted the 1/2" hose going to the radiator when I replaced it and the hoses. Read tons of posts going both ways about needing it or deleting it. My new rad already had a plug where the 1/2" went so I didn't bother putting it back in.

It must be a 1990. That's the only year that I've seen that hose on. Since it was for just the one year (as far as I know) I doubt that it was very effective or very important. In fact, it was so unimportant that in the later 90's, the guy at the local Ford dealership couldn't even find it listed in the computer anywhere when I tried to replace one.

1991 with a e4. 5/8 coming out of the head to a tee, 5/8 going to the heater core and 1/2 going to the rad. Supposedly the 1/2 is to help heat the trans cooler and warm the trans fluid faster. My Chilton book shows it that way too.

I did find the entire hose assembly on Ford's parts site before they went and redesigned it, now I can't find any parts there for our trucks. For some reason I was almost always able to find parts the stealership parts idiot couldn't find on the old site. :dunno

I really only see them on low mile trucks here and there because most have been replaced by the time I see them. FYI jeremy idk if you saw my email with the bullnose pics bud, area was flooded where the truck was at and couldn’t get to it

Actually, no I didn't see it. That's probably my fault. I bought an aftermarket bezel. I just didn't get time to install it this weekend.

When the sun came up, the hose clamp was apparent. $3.00 later and I'm back on the road.... now with a leaking fuel heater... ugh...

Thanks for the help!

Here is some information on that bypass hose from the heater return to the water pump. That 1/2 line going to the bottom radiator area is JUST for the E4OD equipted trucks. So far nobody has come up with a positive reason for this engineering idea.some think it was to warm up the trans fluid quicker. Some say it was only for the trucks in the very cold areas of the US and Canada. My rig was built in Canada. It HAD this bypass. I got the hell rid of it.I was replacing the line when I saw the fitting on the bottom of the radiator. I thought it was plugged up so I removed it to clean it.. Nope. Its a very small ported fitting. It will NOT pass the flow of the 1/2 inch hose.
Another interesting find was the fitting leaving the passenger side head. Its ported very small too. It wont flow the amount of the 5/8 hose to the heater core. There is a small rubber orifice internally to it. About 14 years ago I "found this".. I purchased the last piece ford had. Maybe Navistar has these but ford will not.. Is this needed??? I do not know...e

Your welcome. I didn't want to say you have no idea what you're talking about. It's hard to tell what some people will do to these trucks. It could have had a crimped on heater hose on one end. I've seen worse.cookoo
