I posted in my project thread that I need to swap out my axle pivot bushings in the '89 F250. I see online how to beat the small lip inwards off of one side of the bushing and then press it out with a ball joint press.

My question to those who have done this, how difficult is it to get the I-beam unbolted and down so I can access the bushings. Do I need to remove my leaf U-bolts? Loosen them?

I've done it on my 2wd but that uses coils. It wasn't that hard for me, worst part was lining it back up afterwards. Obviously you will need GOOD jackstands under the FRAME.

I can't tell you how hard it is on a 4x4, but actually changing the bushing itself wasn't too hard for me. I used my balljoint press to get the old one out and the new one in.

I used an air chisel. Took 2 min. I was replacing my leaf springs so I am not sure - they were off. I dropped it down, air chiseled it out, and jacked it back into the socket. That was the hardest part, jacking the new bushing back into the sockets. Lots of grease to squeeze it in there and a pry bar. The bushing is new so it's a tight fit and it does need to be jacked into place.

Its not bad. You do not have to mess with the leaf springs at all. I think I used a pry bar to get it free from the bracket once the bolt was loose.

Anyone able to send me a page of the factory manual where they detail the procedure for replacing these bushings? I have seen some images of the manual for later model year trucks and it looks like ford has a special tool for removing/installing them. I'm looking for the part numbers of the tool(s). It would likely save a lot of time if the tool will fit perfectly and I can just pop them in/out with an impact instead of the air chisel and balljoint press method.

I ordered a factory service manual on CD but it has not arrived yet.

Thank you! I see that is for the 4x2... do you know if the part numbers are the same for the 4x4?

So at considerable expense (nearly $400) I bought the ford tools to pull and install the axle pivot bushings. Hopefully it will make this job a cinch. Then I can sell those tools, or rent them out to make some of that back and help others with this universally hated job.
