Hey guys I'm new to the oil burner fourm /any fourm (I'm not very good on the computer especially for a 32 year old man) but I have a question and hopeing the collective knowledge of this group that has helped me with a lot of the little issues iv had with my truck can help so I have an 86 f350 with a 6.9 idi and it is basically all stock except for the hypermax turbo. Anyone with the hypermax knows the uppipes seem a little long winded and small/restricted has anyone built larger diameter uppipes for a hypermax turbo and what were the results to Me it just seems like it would be very beneficial especially since I am getting ready to put a new IP and injectors in it

I’m not a pipe diameter expert but I’d think the smaller pipes would keep velocity up for a quicker spool. Factory y pipe was only 2.25”. I’d be more worried about down pipe diameter

That's what I was thinking and I'm running the hypermax down pipe that has just over 2.5 diameter to a 3 inch straight pipe that dumps right before the rear passenger wheel and the uppipes are just over 11/2 if not 1 1/2 pipes. Hell maby I'm just thinking too much

For a stock idi it really doesn’t matter, but it’s definitely not the best design. A customer of mine is running one of my turbo kits with his old hyper max turbo, just the change in the piping he saw boost about 350 rpms sooner, and a tad less egts.

My kit used 2.25 up pipes. It’s still in the testing stages, haven’t had any issues with it yet but want to run it through the ropes before i make it publicly available

Might want to read the Hall of Shame forum BEFORE you buy injectors or an injection pump. The cheapest ebay pumps are that way for good reasons. some fake re-builders pick wrecker pumps. Test run them. Clean off some dirt and paint the outside of the pump. PLEASE NEVER BUY A PAINTED INJECTION PUMP. Its a horrible waste.

ICANFIXALL thank you for your words of advice I have read a lot of the information you have planted here on oil burner and it has helped me I have a company in North Dakota in mindd unless you have any better places and thewespaul I will build a set of 2.25 up pipes and beat the ole dirty pearl ttill she wants to puke and let you know winter is coming so I should have plenty of time with the truck after the kids go to bed and did you see any jump in boost I don't want to push the heads to much and blow a head gasket right now I can climb homestake pass in Western Montana ,4 gear at 53 mph and still have some juice left with 9k camp trailer behind but I'm getting ready to do a zf5 or gearvendor

No change in boost, you will really only see the boost change if you change the fueling

Might wanna rethink the larger up pipes. Hypermax designed it to keep the boost low enough at high rpm with the smaller pipes. Large pipes would likely overboost a stock 6.9 and the smaller ones provide good boost off the line. This is a reasonwhy they call it a pulse turbo

Mikey is gonna have to disagree there, if anything he’s going to have less boost because of the decreased exhaust velocity (Bernoulli’s principle) with the larger up pipes. Definitely would have less back pressure which would actually help hold the gaskets together, because with the high pressure ratios these stock style turbos have, it’s usually the buildup of pressure in exhaust that blows a head gasket, not in the intake. This is why I’ve been a proponent of not deleting the wastegates on the 093 trucks, it sky rockets your back pressure.

Your boost will really only change when the combustion increases or decreases in size. Air temperature, timing, and fueling are the main things that determine this. Regardless of if he goes to 4” up pipes, the exhaust still is bottle necked at the turbine wheel.

In oher words, these pipes are tuned for a lower rpm, is what I am trying to explain.

Ok my thoughts on bigger up pipes was a way to open the exhaust up a bit to help keep the egt's down and help the engine be more efficient in it's cycle .right now it feels like I have the most power around 1800 to 2000 rpm's. and the turbo does spool very low in the rpm range i gguess what I'm looking for is more power and keep the reliability I have had with this truck.

Also I wasn't even thinking of over boosting and blowing a head gasket I beat the old truck but also keep a close eye on my gauges and I'm not afraid to let out when needed
