Hey everyone I am new to the site. I have a 1989 f350 7.3 idi. I am having trouble finding the original fuel tanks and sending units for this truck. Previous owner had universal tanks rigged up becouse it had a flatbed. But I am wanting to go back original. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Perfect time to swap in a 38 gallon rear tank. Someone will post with more specifics , I haven't done the swap. For sending units , my unit from eBay seller trexauto works perfectly.

The sending unit was a direct replacement. The larger tank mounts in the back. It basically replaces the rear spare tire with extra fuel capacity.

I really like my 38 gallon rear + 19 gal front. Lots of fuel available meaning I don't have to fill up so often, and can do it where it's cheapest.

To clarify this for the OP, the sending unit he ordered was a direct fit for the STOCK tanks.

If you decide to upgrade to the larger tank I'm pretty sure you have to extend the pickups on the sender for the new tank.

@homelessduck Am I correct on this?

I think the 38 gal also eliminates your ability to use spare tire carrier typically found under rear tank. I bought original size replacement tanks made of plastic / pvc and used pick-up assemblies normally used on gas system. Been working great for many years, they're less expensive and far easier to locate than diesel.

I like the idea of the 38 gal tank I will be ordering it so all I need now is the sending unit and a filler neck seeing as how mine is a dually and has fender flares I’m not sure if the standard neck I’ve found online will work with that tank

I’ve got dually filler necks if you are having issues sourcing them new.

Here’s the sending unit for that year truck. You will need to extend the pickup and the float arm to work with the deeper tank.

That would be great. Because I can’t find them anywhere new. I’m going to just run the rear one so that’s the only one I need

Good point. However mine didn't come with a shower head pick up. I always just do the v notched hose mod. So you would just have to make the hose a little longer. Easy to figure out with the tank removed.
